Banzai Japan (2025) Okinawa: Episode 28 – Nakamurake (Nakamura Residence)

Hey everyone, it’s DJ Ben aka Yellow Pigbar. Welcome back to another episode of Bonsai Japan. Today we’re at the Nakamura residence. [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] Nakamuraka is a beautifully preserved traditional Rukuan house right here in Kitan Nakagus village. Let’s step back in time and explore how Okino once lived. Nakamur dates back to the 18th century, showcasing wooden homes with red tile roofs, stone walls, and a funu inspired layout. The entire property is surrounded by lush greenery and shisa statues for protection. [Music] Visitors can walk through original tatami rooms, admire futons, kitchens, and see how a wealthy farming family once lived. This is like a living museum. Now there is a cafe right in front of the Nakamura. [Music] The Nakamura residence was designated an important cultural property in 1972. It survived the battle of Okinawa, giving us a rare intact look at pre-war Riku and architecture. Nakamura is not just a house. It’s a symbol of Okinawa’s enduring spirit, community, and respect for nature. The layout of the home follows funu principles and the shisa protectors at the gate show Okinoa’s unique spiritual traditions, a blend of indigenous beliefs and Chinese influences. Nakamura is the perfect spot to experience authentic Rikuan culture. If you’ve enjoyed today’s episode of Bonsai Japan, don’t forget to like, share, comment, and subscribe.
