SEOUL – South Korean Prime Minister Kim Min Seok is considering visiting Japan early next year, as part of efforts to strengthen close communication between the two neighbors, a South Korean government source said Tuesday.
If realized, the visit to Japan by Kim, who assumed office in July, would be the first time in three years for a South Korean prime minister. In 2022, then Prime Minister Han Duck Soo attended former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s state funeral.
The source said that Kim could hold talks with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi during the visit.
During a meeting in Seoul on Monday with a Japanese delegation from the Japan-Korea Cooperation Committee, which includes politicians and business leaders, Kim expressed his intention to visit Japan in January or February, an official of the Prime Minister’s Secretariat said.
South Korean President Lee Jae Myung and Takaichi held their first meeting late last month on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in South Korea, where they pledged to advance bilateral relations and agreed to continue reciprocal visits to maintain close communication.
