Officials in Okinawa Prefecture, southwestern Japan, say much of the prefecture’s main island may have no water supply due to a ruptured water pipe.

The officials say a water main in Ogimi Village broke and a massive leak was found early on Monday.

The pipe was laid in 1967 and carried water from a dam to purification plants. More than one of them is unable to operate following the leak.

Prefectural officials say 11 municipalities out of 26 on the island may have no running water. They include Yomitan Village and the towns of Kin and Kadena.

The officials say six other municipalities, including Onna Village and Naha City, may also be partially affected.

They are urging people to cut back on their water use.

It is unclear when the damage will be repaired. Prefectural officials are preparing to use another pipe.
