Free domestic flights across All Nippon Airways regional network across Japan are being offered to UK and European passengers.

The promotion, being made in conjunction with the Japan National Tourism Organisation (JNTO), is available from today (Monday) until January 31.

Up to two ANA domestic flights will be free of charge on all economy bookings made within the timeframe. Departures are valid for any point in the future, according to the airline.

The incentive is designed to encourage European tourists beyond gateway hubs of Tokyo and Kyoto to travel to lesser-known regions of Japan.

ANA aims to make regional exploration easier and affordable by offering free access to more than 40 points – Japan’s largest domestic network.

A statement said: “By driving travellers into lesser-visited destinations, ANA intends for the campaign to help address over-tourism in Japan’s popular hotspots and connect its customers with more authentic tourism experiences.”

Japan attracted a record of almost 37 million international arrivals last year, with much of the demand concentrated on a handful of well-known cities.

While more than 90% of inbound travellers say they intend to visit regional areas, fewer than 10% have done so.
