Massive water leak in northern Okinawa cuts supply to 17 municipalities

NAHA, Japan – A massive water leak occurred in the northern part of Okinawa on Monday and is expected to cause outages in 17 of 41 municipalities in the island prefecture, the local government said.

A rupture occurred in a nearly 60-year-old water pipe in Ogimi between a dam and a water treatment facility, it said.

2 unresponsive, several injured as car rams into pedestrians in Tokyo

TOKYO – A car rammed into pedestrians in Tokyo’s Adachi Ward on Monday, with two people showing no vital signs and several others injured, rescuers said.

Police have detained the driver and are investigating the incident as a hit-and-run involving a stolen vehicle, investigative sources said.

G20 vows to share responsibility for global issues amid Japan-China rift

HPV vaccine cuts cervical cancer risk by 80% for girls under 16: study

TOKYO – An international team of researchers said Monday that receiving the human papillomavirus vaccine by age 16 reduces the risk of developing cervical cancer by 80 percent.

The finding by the team from Cochrane, a nonprofit network of health researchers and professionals, is based on data from about 132 million people in 225 studies released worldwide as of September last year.

More countries curb 1-on-1 coaching of underage athletes to prevent abuse

TOKYO – As awareness of abuse and violence toward young athletes has risen, a growing number of sporting bodies around the world are restricting one-on-one coaching of those underage as a precaution.

In the United States, it comes against the backdrop of a series of sexual abuse cases in recent years. Some 470 cases among a record-high 8,098 reported in 2024 to the U.S Center for Safesport — an independent specialized agency on violence and abuse prevention — accounted for abuse prevention violations against the minors.

Japan firms turn to satellites, AI to find abandoned houses for sale

TOKYO – Dozens of Japanese companies are capitalizing on a combination of satellite imagery and artificial intelligence to help them find abandoned houses that could be put up for sale, as the graying country copes with a rise in deserted housing.

A service provided by startup Where Inc. uses AI trained on tens of thousands of photos to identify aging roofs, based on characteristics such as rustiness and colors. Houses that are likely left abandoned are marked on satellite imagery.

Japan, India agree to steadily carry out agreement on security, economy

JOHANNESBURG – The leaders of Japan and India agreed Sunday that their countries will steadily implement the agreement made at their August summit to strengthen security cooperation and economic partnership.

During their talks on the sidelines of the Group of 20 summit in South Africa, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and her Indian counterpart Narendra Modi also confirmed cooperation toward realizing a free and open Indo-Pacific, according to the Foreign Ministry.
