OSAKA — The Japan Association for the 2025 World Exposition recently invited the media to see the ongoing dismantling of pavilions on the artificial island of Yumeshima in Osaka one month after the global event ended.
On Nov. 13, workers in helmets were quietly engaged in the removal process, with dump trucks raising dust as they transported debris.
The Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, ended its six-month run on Oct. 13. At the Electric Power Pavilion near the East Gate, the dismantling of floors and other interior structures was underway. Outside, workers used heavy machinery to carefully sort and separate recyclable materials such as steel and concrete fragments.
Inside the Great Ring, the venue’s iconic large roof, the demolition work of international pavilions was in full swing. Scaffolding surrounded the France Pavilion and the USA Pavilion, with sandbags and construction materials piled up in various areas of the plaza.
The Expo association has requested that participating countries and companies demolish their pavilions by April 13, 2026. The site is to be cleared and returned to the landowner, the city of Osaka, by the end of February 2028. In addition, the Grand Ring will be partially dismantled, except for a 200-meter section on the northeast side, and the wood will be repurposed.
