👵🍦Japan’s Nostalgic Grandmas’ Ice Cream
様 2度と戻らない の 思いでも今波が洗い
🌹👵🍦Have you ever seen this Japanese unique regional ice cream?
🌹Babahera is a classic ice cream in Japan’s northern Akita Prefecture! Head to Akita in the warmer months of the year and you’ll find these lovely grandmas on the side of the road, in front of museums, and at community centers whipping up their lovely shaped ice cream!
🍦🍌🍓Actually a bit more like a sherbet or water ice, the internet says the 2 flavors are banana and strawberry, but as an adult they definitely taste a bit like the “generic nostalgic kids flavors”- and I’m here for it!
🗣️If you can speak Japanese, these grandmas are usually willing to chat with you!
🎥I’m sure most of them are okay to be filmed, but don’t forget to ask to be polite ☺️ (that’s a norm in Japan)
🗓️Famously out in warmer months, I’ve gotten it during June and October trips to Akita. One online article says it’s around from “mid-April to late October,” but the dates don’t seem to be set, so it might vary on the year’s conditions.
❄️If you go during winter, you can often find a pre-packaged Babahera in the freezer section of gift shops in the area, so fear not!
📍All over Akita Precture! On the side of the road, in front of malls and museums, and at community centers and events. If you go to Akita outside of winter, you’re bound to find them!
👵Babahera ババヘラaka Babahera Aisu ババヘラアイス
Baba- grandma
Hera- spatula (that’s what they use to make the rose shape)
Aisu- the Japanese way of saying the English “ice,” which is short of ice cream in Japanese
