Day Trip from Tokyo – Hakone 🇯🇵 Mt. Fuji Views, Volcanic Valley, Black Eggs & Pirate Ships!
If you’re planning a trip to Japan and
looking for the perfect day trip from Tokyo, Hakone should definitely be on your list. In this
video, we’re exploring a 400-year-old tea house serving warm and freshly roasted mochi, taking in
the spectacular views around Lake Ashi, and even boarding a pirate ship that takes you across
the lake with breathtaking views overlooking Mount Fuji. We’ll also ride the ropeway up into
Owakudani, a dramatic volcanic valley filled with steam vents and sulfur clouds, where we’ll try the
iconic Black Egg cooked in the hot springs. We’ll also show you exactly how to get to Hakone from
Tokyo, the easiest route around the Hakone Loop, and all the transport you’ll use along the way
using the Hakone Free Pass. And we’re starting our day trip right here in Shinjuku. Okay guys, first
things first, we have got our QR code from the Hakone Free Pass. Hopefully, we can use this to
scan onto these gates just over here. All right, hopefully this works. Hey, there we go, guys.
Straight on through. And the train has arrived, guys. We’re looking for car number two. We
actually reserved our seat with the limited express. So the Hakone Free Pass actually covers
the train travel from Shinjuku to Hakone. But to get a seat reservation, you need to get an
express train ticket and that’s how you’ll get your car number and seat number. You can see
very busy morning here in Shinjuku and this is car number three. What’s your name right now? Ivan.
Ivan, nice to meet you. Ah, nice to meet you. We are neighbors. Is it your first time in Japan or?
Yes. So you were watching all of our videos before started with them. Okay. Wow. That’s such a great
feeling to know. Did it Did they help? Very much so. Great. Hi, nice to meet you. Nice to meet
you for your information. It was We are so We are so happy that it helped you guys because
like that’s what we look for. That’s our job. I want to do And we have made it to Hakone. Guys, look how
beautiful our view is right in front of us. Now, today’s plan is to do the full Hakone loop.
We’re going to be showing you all the best things to do in Hakone. And that’s why it’s
really important to get the Kuke Hakone free pass because many of the activities we’re
doing today is covered through that pass, including our transport around Hakone. So, it
is a no-brainer. If you’re coming to Hakone, you definitely want to get the free pass.
We’ll put a link in the description or you can scan the QR code on screen to find out
more information. Next, we’re going to be taking a bus just from this bus stop right
out here to a very traditional tea house. You guys been to our city in Canada? No,
we haven’t been to Canada yet. It’s on the plans. It’s on the plans. the Canadian Rockies.
Absolutely. Yeah, that’s on the plans. Karolina has been asking for such a long time that
we need to go to Canada. I would love to. No, they’re going to pay. Oh, what? I think you can go with the
other bus. So, the bus will be faster. QR codes. Most people do their con loop anticlockwise, but we decided to go clockwise instead. Going
this way actually helps you to avoid the crowds, especially when you take the ropeways and the
cruise across Lake Ashi later on. You’ll still need to wait for some connections, but nowhere
near as long as if you go the other way. So, if you’re planning your own Hakone day trip,
this small change really makes a big difference. After a short bus ride, our first stop was
the Hakone Amazake Tea House. And it’s hard to believe it’s been here for over 400 years on
the Tokaido Road. As soon as you walk in, you can smell the old wooden interior. It’s warm, cozy,
and feels incredibly traditional, especially when you sit on the cushions with the low tables. They
only serve two things here. The first is amaz, a warm non-alcoholic drink made from fermented
rice with a gentle comforting sweetness. And the second is their grilled mochi. We went for
the one coated in black sesame and kinakaco, which is roasted soybean powder that gives this
nutty toasty flavor. The outside is slightly crispy from the grill, and the inside is soft and
gooey. Honestly, the perfect way to start the day. So right behind the tea house there
is this trail that will take us all the way to Hakone shrine. I believe it’s
around 50inute light hike. What is this trail called Karolina? It’s actually a part
of the old Tokaido trail. So it’s a nice and very beautiful way to be immersed in nature.
But if you fancy just taking the bus there, it can get a little bit slippery on the rocks
when it’s been raining, but still very nice. Okay, guys. We’re going to be honest with you.
We weren’t expecting it to be as challenging as it was. What we found out at the end of the
trail, the old road was one of the five most difficult routes of the Edo period. But we
only did the last part from the tea house. Awesome. Uh, can we upgrade to first class? First class. Okay. Yes. To to do you have a ticket?
Uh, we have the Hakone Free Pass. Free pass. Okay. Okay. It’s okay. Okay. Okay.
1,400. I can pay my card. No, only insert. You can insert the
card if you want. It’s no problem. This way. 2 minutes. Okay. So, last
minute we decided to do an upgrade. We went first class for the Hakone
sightseeing cruise just over here. It looks like a pirate ship. We’ve got
to be quite quick cuz it’s leaving. Ladies first. So, we are in first class, guys.
As I said, this is nice. It looks like a lounge. Hello. Well, that was a very pleasant experience
strolling along Lake Ashi. Having the front view of the ship, upgrading into first class is
definitely worth the money. Yeah. And also, you could go on top of the deck. And actually, the
wind was quite strong, but the views were amazing. On a day like this, we have 100% visibility. It
is absolutely stunning. If you’re planning to do the Aone Loop, the easiest way to get around is
by using the Hakone Free Pass. And we booked ours through KLOOK. It covers pretty much everything
you’ll need for the day. The local trains, buses, ropeway, and even the pirate style cruise
across Lake Ashley. Once you have the pass, it’s super simple. You’ll get a QR code
straight on your phone that you can scan on all the different transports around Hakone. You
can book it through the link in the description or by scanning the QR code on screen. Earlier in this
video, you’ll have seen us taking the romance car from Shinjuku to Hakone Yumoto. The Hakone Free Pass already covers the base fair for that route, but you’ll still need to pay a small extra fee to
reserve your seat on the express train. You can book that express train ticket directly on Klook.
All you have to do is scan the QR code on screen or use the link in the description to grab your
tickets. Klook is the number one booking platform for tours and activities in Japan and we’ve
been using it to book all of our activities across the country. We highly recommend booking
in advance, especially in Japan. And when you do, don’t forget to use our discount code JAYKAROLINAKLOOK to save some money whilst you’re at it. After the cruise, it was finally
time to hop on the Hakone ropeway, a scenic cable car that’s part of the Hakone
loop and fully covered with the Hakone Free Pass. And the very please wait until the gondola has come
to a complete stop before getting off. For passengers going to Owakudani and Sounanzen stations, please stay on the gondola. We will soon arrive
at station. That’s beautiful. Please check. We have made it guys to Owakudani. You can
see the sulfur coming out of the volcanic crater. It smells like eggs. Very strong eggy
smell. Wow. Look at this, guys. I’m so amazed. One thing you definitely can’t miss here
in Owakudani is trying the famous black eggs. The valley is known for them and
they are boiled right in the hot sulfur springs. And it said that eating one can
add seven years to your life. So thousands of visitors buy them every single day. And
we were super lucky because we got there around 300 p.m. And just 15 minutes
later, they were completely sold out. Four black eggs, please. Thank you my friend. Thank you. Thank you. Are you enjoying sitting on the eggs? Yes. They’re actually warm. If you guys don’t know, Karolina absolutely loves eggs. She has
it every single day. Boiled eggs. Yes. And now she’s having some black ones. They’re
really black, actually. How should I eat it? Tastes good. Mhm. It’s so funny
because it tastes even more eggy than an egg because there’s some
sort of like the sulfur aftertaste. After exploring the volcanic valley, it
was time to continue the loop by taking the second part of the Hakone
ropeway down to Sounzan Station. from There we boarded the Hakone Tozan Cable Car. Everyone trying to get home.
We’ve made it. There isn’t that much space on this cable car. That’s why. The cable car ends at Gora Station, a cute little
mountain station where we switch to the Hakone Tozan Railway, which takes you all the way back to
the starting point of the loop at Hakone Yumoto. We got off just one stop earlier at Tonosawa
station because Hakone is also famous for its hot springs. We took a short walk to Hakone Youro, one
of the area’s most love onen resorts. It’s highly rated and you even get a discount with the Hakone
Free Pass. You leave your shoes at the entrance, slip into a light cotton yukata rope, and choose
between public or private baths with a variety of indoor and open air pools, each filled with
steaming natural spring water. The atmosphere feels almost magical with steam rising from
the water, soft light through the trees, and mountains all around you. It’s the perfect way
to relax, unwind, and let the whole day sink in. What a day it’s been. From walking the
old Takaida road and stopping for Mochi and Amazake at a traditional tea house to
sailing on a pirate ship across Lake Ashi with beautiful Mount Fuji views right in front
of us. Then heading up to the volcanic valley to try those famous black eggs. Hakone truly has
this perfect mix of adventure and peace. It’s the kind of place that reminds you just how
special Japan is. And with that being said, don’t forget to subscribe and we’ll see
you guys in the next video. Oh dear.

Very nice. Thanks for sharing. ❤
Hi
Do you need to book the train back to Tokyo or just jump on one?
Thanks
After getting to Hakone I took a bus to the Amasake Tea House. I was very nervous about getting on the right bus but luckily there were other tourists going to the same place! After getting seated in a beautiful old room, I ordered their speciality amazake and mochi.
When I fininished I hiked about 2 miles up the port. This started off with a very tough climb, then short descent. Near the top there's a small shrine which looks like it's not been touched for decades!
Upon reaching the port I grabbed a quick ice cream and honey toast snack at Bakery and Table while I waited 20 minutes for the pirate ship. I upgraded to First Class which IMO was well worth it and I could get a seat at the front and go outside for spectacular views of the famous Torii gate.
Tonight I'm staying at Ryuguden ryokan. It's a bit hard to get to as I was confused as to which bus to get at Togendai, as some buses don't have numbers . Eventually I got on the correct one!
I was nervous about staying here but at dinner I spotted a lot of foreign tourists and the staff speak excellent English. The room is nicely appointed but a bit worn around the edges. It does have amazing views of Mt Fuji today! During dinner the futon was made for me. I booked a room with a private onsen bath, but wierdly it's in a different room across the hall, so I have to get dressed, lock my room, walk across the corridor, open the private bath, then lock that behind me. Such a faff! The room as a grassy smell to it which I think is the tatami (maybe it's new?).
The dinner was sevred at 6pm with a traditional kaiseki course meal. First, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh. This was delicious!
I had a wonderful nights sleep on the futon, the only issue being some of the small lights around the room which I couldn't tape over.
I was meant to get up at 5am to walk to the Torii gate so I could get some photos without waiting in line but I was so tired after yesterday's hike I slept in. The road had no pavement so it might have been quite dangerious anyway (but I did see groups of people later walking).
I had a traditional Japanese breakfast at 8am, followed by a soak in my private onsen bath, then check-out.
There was a bit of confusion at the start as I was meant to take the 09:40 J bus to Togendai station but the driver said no Hakone Freepass and told me to get a bus with no number at 10:30. I asked the bus driver can I pay and he said I can use IC card, so I used that!
I got on the ropeway at 10:05 after running to it from the bus stop, as I could see a pirate ship bearing down into port and I wanted to beat the rush of tourists. Luckily when I got there there was no-one and got on stright away, sharing the car with 2 other people.
I spent about 2 hours in the volcanic steam area, viewing the sights and Geo museum. The area did have a eggy whiff to it! I got a snack of black ice-cream which I expected to taste just of vanilla but it did have another unknown flavour in it. I didn't try the famous black eggs as I heard they just where normal tasting eggs. There was also a walking tour of the volcanic area but the 10:30 was fully booked. The area wasn't as busy as I had feared and there were some benches to rest at.
I got the ropeway to Sounzan Station (again no queue to get on) at 12:30 where I had a 5 miniute rest at the footbath, then the cablecar (busy but got a seat) and train (not too busy and got a seat) to Chokokunomori Station for the Open Air Museum.
I stayed at the museum for about an hour from 13:00 to 14:00, viewing the exhibits. I was especially excited to the some of Picasso's works, as I've never seen them in person before. But unfortunately no photos allowed. I enjoyed exploring the secret garden where I could relax in peace. The tower was also a hightlight with spectaluar views from the top. I had a quick snack of ice cream in a hot bun at their cafe. Overall the museum was not crowded.
I got the 14:10 train to Hakone (again not too busy with spectalular views on the way) and had a short time to explore before my booked Romancecar at 15:18. I randomly found some yummy dango at Houjou Sanfuku Dango.
I had tried to book the front seats of the special Romancecar Observation train as soon as they were released but failed, so I got seat 4D in the rear observation section. It was a little bit far back from the main window and still provided good views.
We used your code for klook, will be in Japan in Dec YAY
