Beppu in 2 Days: Hells, Hot Springs & Steam-Cooked Food! Japan’s Onsen Capital | Travel Vlog
We’ve made it to Beppu! One of Japan’s most famous hot spring towns First impressions? the air here is thick with steam Literally! You can see it rising from vents all over the city After a bus ride from Kurokawa Onsen, we arrived in Beppu late at night. We checked into our hotel got settled, and called it a night Tomorrow we finally get to see what this hot spring town is all about. Good morning from Beppu! We’re starting the day with Kaiseki breakfast from the hotel! It consists of an appetizer, sashimi, a simmered dish, grilled fish and a steamed course With our bellies full, we hopped on a bus to check out one of Beppu’s most famous attractions the Hells of Beppu! Located in the historic Kannawa district this collection of seven unique hot springs has been a sightseeing destination for centuries Each ‘hell’ has an entry fee of 450 yen, but we grabbed the combo pass for 2,200 yen and set off to see them all Let’s start with the first one. This is not the actual hell Just a regular hot spring before the actual Umi Jigoku Hell It is still impressive though! After you go through the small museum, you will see the first official “hell” Someone’s cooking This is the largest of the seven hells is this a free facial? There’s also a shrine! Alright, that’s one hell down—six more to go! With the combo ticket, you get a map and a little ticket booklet to tear off at each stop. And of course, in true Japanese fashion, there’s a stamp rally, so you can collect a stamp at every hell along the way. Each spot has something different going on— whether it’s the color of the water, the crazy steam, or even the little snacks they sell. Can’t wait to see what’s next! Let’s go to the next hell! It is right around the corner This mud is over 100°C ! This hot spring is named after the mud that resembles a shaven monk’s head Second stamp acquired! Let’s walk to the next hell It is just a 10 minute walk away This next spot seems to be bigger! You can drink the hot spring water! Should’ve brought a tea bag! You can also inhale the steam! But do so carefully In this spot there are 6 different hot springs! There was a guided tour! And a big snacks area With foot baths to relax while you’re having a snack Third stamp done! By this point, we needed a break, so we grabbed a classic Beppu snack steamed sweet potato, cooked with hot spring steam. And, of course, ice cream! We love Cremia ice cream! It is our favorite when in Japan Let’s continue with the hell tour! The next two hells were quick stops for us but still worth checking out. This hell also houses tropical fish! Now, time for the last two! These are a bit farther out, so you’ll need to take a bus to see them. This is actually a geyser! Eruption occurs every other 30-40 minutes So make sure to grab a seat! There it is up close Now for our last hell in this tour! Chinoike Jigoku is actually one of the oldest natural hot springs in Japan! Cute to see all of those devils! Now let’s check out the gift shop! But first, our stamp! Lots of figurines! Loved how they represented steam With the hell tour done, we hopped on a bus and made our way back to the Kannawa district We really appreciated how well everything was set up for the tour making it easy and enjoyable to see these natural wonders up close. We managed to fill out our map! Walking through the streets, steam was still rising from vents all around us a reminder of Beppu’s constant geothermal energy at work Eventually, we stumbled upon a viewpoint that gave us the perfect shot of the city This is where the Ogiyama Fire Festival takes place! To welcome spring’s arrival, Mount Ohira’s grass is set on fire! We will walk towards our next stop! Kifune Castle! You can’t beat these views! We’re now looking for hot spring steam cooked food! Steam everywhere! Lots of onsen for you to try! Time for steamed food! Menu is big! We went for package no. 3 You wait for your turn to take your food to the steaming section It’s finally our turn! For our last stop of the day, we had to try one of Beppu’s specialties hot spring steamed food. They use natural steam from the hot springs to cook everything and you get to do it yourself! but don’t worry: they guide you along after waiting 15 minutes, the result? simple, healthy and packed with flavor. It was the perfect way to end our first day. It’s very good! and healthy They provide lots of sauces and seasonings, lots! We also steamed dessert! Today it was all about what came from beneath the earth but tomorrow, it’ll be from high up! we’re heading up to Mt Tsurumi for some fresh air and even better views Now let’s go rest! A brand new day, a new kaiseki breakfast! We could definitely get used to this Nattō beans are rich in micro and macronutrients! It’s a beautiful day today That’s where we’re headed! Charging the IC card! The bus is here! We’re here! Ropeway is about to leave! Made it in time We made it to the top! There doesn’t seem to be much of a view Clouds are rolling in! At first, it seemed like we wouldn’t get much of a view thick clouds covered everything. Could it be the steam following us around? We decided to carry on and explore the area and we also had to keep on climbing After a little while, the sky started to clear, revealing the mountains in the distance There’s a certain peace in waiting for the tide to change and it felt like a total reset from yesterday’s bustle and heat. The fresh air, the climb— everything felt more rewarding. There’s an antenna at the top! Definitely worth the visit! There’s this little observation platform But a big cloud came rolling in! It still looks magical though we were just there! We’re leaving! They announce via loudspeakers if the cable car is leaving Leaving the fog at the top of the mountain! Waiting for the bus back to Beppu Station Back in town, we rewarded ourselves with a delicious red bean-filled manju before strolling around for a bit That’s when we stumbled upon a bakery and if you know us, you know we love bread turns out, locals love this one too That is their handwritten menu! They give you a piece of paper and you write your order We couldn’t film inside, but everything looked delicious and we secured the bag We just need coffee to go with it We will eat our bread right next to the sea This one is shaped like a dog It was almost time to wrap things up We checked out of the hotel, and since no trip to Japan is complete without it: we did some shopping at Don Quijote The viral hair mask! We’re stocking up on the populars Food looks good though We are hungry! Cheap conveyor belt sushi? yes We love this place We love that they keep coming in! Not a bad haul And some dessert Did we win? no We will now take an overnight ferry to Osaka We will be there by tomorrow at 7am We’re very excited for that experience! So stay tuned for our next video! We will be on a ferry to Osaka And please subscribe! And give this video a like! As you’ve probably noticed by now, we’re not exactly great at the whole YouTuber thing but we just like bringing you along for the ride With our bags in hand, we hopped on a bus to the port, ready to board an overnight ferry something completely new to us So make sure to watch our next video! Beppu was such a unique place relaxing, a little unexpected, and always surrounded by steam. It was everywhere and we kinda loved it But now, it’s time to say goodbye not just to Beppu, but to Kyushu. Time to let that steam carry us somewhere new.
We’re in Beppu, Japan!
One of the most famous hot spring towns in the world! We spent two days exploring this steamy destination, starting with the Hells of Beppu, a series of seven vibrant and boiling geothermal pools. After that, we visited the Kannawa district, found an incredible steam-filled viewpoint, and tried traditional onsen-steamed food.
On our second day, we took the Beppu Ropeway up to Mt. Tsurumi, where the clouds made for a moody scene! We ended our trip with some local snacks and boarded an overnight: our first time doing this in Japan!

別府に来てくれてありがとうございます。別府にはタトゥーがあっても入れる家族湯があります😊
I've seen so many beppu videos and yours was so detailed. I didn't even know that all the hells were spread out all around the town. One of my silly little dreams is to stay in beppu one day at a house with a kitchen, prep tamales and go to one of those open use steam facilities to then steam my tamales 🤣 Can you imagine. I bet you they would sell good over there. Onsen Tamales! Amazing videos as always. Thank you. ❤️
I loved beppu/Oita area will be going back there again.
