Out-of-season sunflowers are drawing visitors in Kyoto City, western Japan.

Farmers in the city’s Oharano district have been growing sunflowers on idle fields every year around this time. They began the effort about 10 years ago to help revitalize their community.

The roughly 5,000 plants are now about a meter tall and have big, yellow flowers.

The farmers sowed seeds in early September so the flowers would be best for viewing in November.

Visitors took photos of the unseasonal scenery amid chilly wind.

A woman in her 50s from Kyoto City said the yellow flowers looked beautiful against the sky. She added that despite the cold, they gave her energy.

Farmer Mukai Yoshiaki said he and his colleagues grow the plants for their community, and expressed hope that people will enjoy the out-of-season flowers this year too.
