How to explore Japan’s most active volcano! 🇯🇵

This volcano violently erupted back in May, a couple weeks after we were there, but I’m pretty sure you can go there again now. Anyway, just a short 15-minute ferry from Kagoshima, Japan’s southernmost major city, lies Sakurajima, Japan’s most active volcano, and I think one of the most active volcanoes in the world. After we arrived, we just kind of started free roaming, walking part of the island’s circumference along the provided path, trying to make our way to this observation point. Later, we found out there’s actually a Sakurajima Island View bus that loops the island in about an hour for something like 500 yen. So, if you’re ever in the area, definitely come here and do that because this place is well worth exploring properly. This bus, this boat smells so much like bacon sandwiches. so lit.

If you take just this short 15-minute ferry from Kagoshima you’ll find Sakurajima. Japan’s most active volcano, and one of the easiest to visit.

It erupts so often that locals carry “volcano umbrellas” to protect themselves from falling ash, not rain.

Over 5,000 people still live here, alongside stray cats and endless views of smoke drifting over the bay.

What you see above ground is just the tip of a massive underground caldera, the same system that shaped all of Kagoshima Bay. It’s beautiful… and a little terrifying.

Save this for when you find yourself in Kyushu few places in Japan feel this alive.
