A group of Japanese businessmen, led by Ryohei Shikata, the first secretary of the Economic Section of the Japanese Embassy in Madrid, traveled to El Ejido to observe its agricultural production methods firsthand.
Manuel Martínez, the councilor for Agriculture and the Environment, welcomed the group at the Town Hall, where he highlighted the factors that have established El Ejido “as a globally recognized municipality in fruit and vegetable production, renowned for its high standards of quality, safety, and sustainability.”
Martínez pointed out that El Ejido has over 13,500 hectares of greenhouses, producing more than one million tons of fruits and vegetables each season, valued at over 1,400 million euros. Besides this activity, there is a sophisticated agro-industry composed of around 95 companies with an annual turnover exceeding 885 million euros.
The councilor emphasized that sustainability is a core pillar of El Ejido’s agricultural model. “We have one of the most respectful production systems in the world, most of which operate under biological control standards, are efficient in water use, and promote resource reuse through circular economy projects,” he stated.
During the visit, Martínez also shared details about El Ejido’s tourism model with the Japanese businessmen, emphasizing its economic importance to the municipality, and provided them with information about the town.
