Temple University, Japan Campus (TUJ) is expanding the impact of its new Kyoto location with the launch of the Adult Study Abroad program in May 2026. This in-residence four-week program offers adult learners the opportunity to experience authentic Japanese culture and language through a combination of structured classroom study with Temple professors, cultural immersion activities and curated field trips.
Since officially opening its second location in Kyoto near the world-renowned Fushimi Inari Shrine in January 2025, TUJ has continued to expand its academic offerings and draw growing interest from students. Enrollment at TUJ Kyoto has risen rapidly to roughly 300 students in the current fall semester up from about 100 in the spring semester in January.
The new four-week Adult Study Abroad program does not require university admission. This unique and engaging non-degree program extends TUJ’s reach to Temple alumni, parents, retirees, global travelers, and members of the public who are eager to explore Japan and pursue lifelong learning. A similar program has been successfully offered for several years at the Rome campus of Temple University.
Program Details
The program will run from May 11 to June 4, 2026, at TUJ Kyoto. Applications are now open, with deadlines for program and housing applications are set for March 15, 2026.

The four-week program is led by TUJ’s undergraduate faculty and select continuing education instructors with deep knowledge about Japan. Instruction includes workshops, practical insights and hands-on experiences. Participants will study in the enchanting city of Kyoto, combining classroom learning with guided excursions that bring the curriculum to life.
Kyoto, home to thousands of temples and cultural treasures, is just a short train ride to Osaka and Kobe, and easily accessible by bullet train from Tokyo, Nagoya, Hiroshima and more.
TUJ Kyoto’s Rapidly Growth
Since its launch, TUJ Kyoto has evolved quickly, attracting strong interest from students. This fall, TUJ extended Temple University’s Honors Program from Philadelphia to Kyoto, offering high-achieving students additional opportunities for academic excellence.
In addition, starting this semester, students majoring in International Business Studies can complete their entire degree at TUJ Kyoto. This offers them the unique opportunity to study in the historic city of Kyoto, an ideal setting where the curriculum blends economics, culture, language and technology with practical business skills.
At the graduate level, TUJ also introduced the Master of Science in Communication Management program this fall. Offered in collaboration with Temple University’s Klein College of Media and Communication in Philadelphia, the one-year program is designed for entry- and mid-level professionals seeking to enhance their leadership and strategic communication skills in an increasingly globalized world.
