Exploring Japan’s most underrated city (Kagoshima day 1)
Heat. Heat. Where the hell am I? I got my egg sandwich. There’s a McDonald’s right there. I’m like a little lost for words right now. There’s a volcano. Literally right there. And I like I can’t even believe where I am right now. Hello there. This is my first meal in Kakushima and I thought I’d make it a little special. Great jasmine tea. Wow, this is incredible. It was like.75. Oh my god. Wait, this is really good. It’s like full of egg, too. So, I’m I’m by the waterfront. Just finished my egg sandwich and my my tea. Absolutely delicious. And I’m thinking to myself, where am I going to go next? So, I look at my map. Oh, baby. There’s a conveyor belt sushi restaurant right on the waterfront. You know, we got to go there for lunch. Yeah, that bird is absolutely ginormous. Just came out of this tree. Holy Oh my god, there it is. It’s hu Oh my god, there’s What? Whoa. Whoa. Whoa. They’re huge. I mean, that is incredible. Can we even see him? Look at how big this guy is. He’s huge. Oh my god, there’s so many. Wait, it’s the whole family. Oh my god, they’re huge. Let me also say a little thing or two about the the weather here. It basically feels like Florida in the summer. Now, mind you, it is September, so it’s only about 80°, but the humidity is off the charts. To be honest with you, I kind of like it. I don’t really care for it that much. Um, so it’s not a huge deal. I mean, this is what the coastline looks like. Pretty cool. I’m heading to that restaurant right there. Mecommon sushi. I’m in the toilet after my delicious sushi meal. It was $37. Swan. That was $37. That was so [ __ ] good. Let’s [ __ ] go. I’m just walking down the uh the main Well, not the main road. It’s sort of a side road. Try to find a little park. But I don’t like these buildings. Super cute. I’ll show you in a second. Just got a massage. Now I’m off to see the Maisie Restoration Museum. We’ll see about that. Huh. Looks like the river and the lake right here. This is the road to the Maji Restoration by the way. H. It is the major museum. Hello there. I’m currently walking. I just went to the Museum of the Maji Restoration, which was incredible. And I learned quite a lot about uh Saigo Takamorei and his efforts to essentially unite Japan um under the pretenses that globalization um nec necessitated modernization um and that they should do with the clan warfare and all that jazz. Very very interesting. Oh, there’s a bird trying to eat me. Um, and now I’m just walking along the river. Um, the the river in uh, Kagoshima. I need to look up what it’s called actually. But, you know, there’s there’s a lot going on here. I’m going to go to the viewing the viewing spot um, and then hopefully look and see Sakurima. So, we will have to see how that works. I love it when they have English telling you what it is and then they have no other English. It’s got to be my favorite thing. We’re at a very busy intersection, but we’re trying to go up there to the mountain. I just met a nice Nepalese man in the in the convenience store. He was wearing a Yankees hat and I said, “Hello, we have the same hat in Japanese.” And he was like, “Oh, you’re right.” in Japanese. And then we talked for like a while, like 15 minutes or 20 minutes. And he’s really nice guy. Um, and we’re friends now. And I got his Instagram. So maybe we’re gonna There’s the little kid. She knew I’m a vlogger. Um, she’s probably stranger danger. Anyway, maybe I’ll see the guy tomorrow. I invited him to climb Sakurajima with me. So we’ll see how that works. But wow, he’s a Nepalese guy and he’s studying business here. Crazy. Also, his Japanese was so good. I don’t know if you can hear it, but sounds of nature resound throughout the entire place. Wow. Did I mention that the weather feels like Florida? Um, I’m actually climbing up a big ass hill right now to see if I can get to the Oh, it’s a little surprise Tory gate. Um, I’m climbing up the uh the mountain basically. There’s a fuckload of stairs I got to climb. Um, but I want to get to the top observatory um before it gets to dark even though I didn’t bring my camera with me and I’m out of water. But I’m full of liquid so should all be good. Remember when I said I was just going up the mountain just to be quick? Jesus Christ. See the sweat on my face? This was no easy task. And it looks like there’s still even more to go. Jesus. Oh, look at that. It’s Sakurajima. I managed to meet a very friendly Japanese man on the way up here. I complimented his calves and then we became immediate friends. Anyway, here’s Shakurima. Check it out. And now we go back down the mountain basically before the the night comes in and the demons attempt to accost me. So, wish me luck in my adventure. Jesus [ __ ] Christ. This is not easy in the slightest. Jesus. Oh, not again. Quick Japanese moment. That says Tomare. The only reason I know that is cuz it’s a Jojo reference. I just want to point that out that I can read that. That’s freaking epic, dude. Oh, I’m so that that makes me so happy that that I can recognize that. All right, now we’re heading to the okonomiyaki store. So, wish me luck. Um, the old man literally just gave me a bottle of liquor for free, by the way. Um, it was an old one that he had in his in his basement. I think he made it himself. He said, “Have half with water and half um liquor.” And he literally gave it to me for free. I was like, “You cannot do this. Please don’t.” And um he did anyway. He’s 80 years old. It was his birthday yesterday. I was like, “Happy birthday, brother.” We had a great conversation. It was so nice in Japanese, by the way. And he just gave me the liquor for free. running into more English speakers as I walk through the main shopping center or something like that. Um, in Kagoshima. But I think there’s more to see. There’s way more to see, way cooler spots. So, get ready. We’re here getting our okonomiyaki which our friend Haruki recommended for us mere moments ago at the top of the Shiyama lookout point. Oh my god. Oh, thank you so much. The question is, how does it fare against Henry’s fate? kamiyaki pork and cheeseyaki. Let’s try it. That’s pretty good. That’s pretty good. Okay, now I see what all the fuss is about. Got to the middle. I’m in the middle. It’s all cheese and pork, baby. Day two, I got my pack a little bit leather. The funny part is though, this weather reminds me of being in Florida. And being in Florida was like literally my happy place when I was a kid.
Kagoshima, the town made famous by its neighboring volcano Sakurajima, it’s beautiful weather, and the surrounding nature. It also is a city with a rich cultural heritage.
In this vlog I yap while walking around. I get an egg sandwich from a family mart, eat it by the water, grab sushi, get a quick massage, and climb the observation deck to see Sakurajima at night. I also manage to make friends with an oji-san and try my first okonomiyaki!
This is my first vlog. If you have any tips on how to improve please leave a comment. Thank you for watching! I hope it was fun.
