If you’re more of a coast vibe type, promise me you’ll visit Izu, one of Japan’s most beautiful peninsulas. We drove on roads that look like this. Got a chairlift up to a volcano that inspired one of the best ever animes. Spotted capibaras bathing in onset. Crossed this bridge. Found secluded beaches. Cruise past mountain monkeys and ate matcha sweets on a mountain soaking in a foot bath with this view. Or take a train to Matsumoto, the Japanese Alps. Oh my, it’s so beautiful. Climb up Japan’s oldest original castle. Welcome to the Crows Castle. Explore Yayoi Kosama’s hometown museum that has vending machines signed by her. soak in relaxing onsent.

2. Izu Peninsula – still to date one of our favourite summer trips in Japan filled with breathtaking coastlines, quiet beaches and amazing natural onsen. Best of all? It’s only an hour by Shinkansen from Tokyo.

3. Matsumoto – a beautiful city in the heart of the Japanese alps that’s filled with stunning mountain scenery, Japan’s oldest standing castle, and also the home of Yayoi Kusama. It’s also surrounded by amazing ski resorts ⛷️
