On the 11th, Orix outfielder Yutaro Sugimoto took the mound in the “Legend’s First Pitch” before the semi-final of the 50th Japan Amateur baseball Championship between NTT East and Yamaha.
He appeared in his uniform and went all out pitch with a yell. He struck out on a straight ball high up the middle and said, “It’s 120 points. I knew practice wouldn’t betray me. Noumi-san didn’t strike get in, but I did, so I’ll tell him the next time I see him,” he said, showing his famous ascending pose on mound.
He borrowed a glove from pitcher Daisuke Kondo of The Giants, who was also born in 1991 and retired at the end of this season. “I thought I would blame him if I didn’t get strike, but it did go in (laughs),” he said, expressing his gratitude to his former colleague from his time with Orix, who gave him strength.
Raoh, who was pitcher during his time at Tokushima Commercial High School, practiced pitch many times at Maishima in Osaka in preparation for this day. “I asked a lot of people what my pitching speed was, and they said it was around 125 to 130, so it was just about right for me to hit it (laughs). I thought I might be able to get it to about 140, but it didn’t come out at all, so now I can concentrate on being fielder,” he said with a wry smile.
