After spending more than two decades, JR East announced in November that their beloved mascot, the penguin on the Suka card, will be retiring after 25 years as the face of Japan’s iconic IC card. The penguin is created by illustrator Shiharu Sakazaki. The character was inspired by a penguin native to Antarctica. Since its debut in 2001 alongside the launch of the Suka prepaid electronic money service, the penguin has become a cherished symbol for many commuters across Japan. Reflecting on the announcement, Zakasaki commented that grateful to have walked alongside the Suka Penguin all these years. The author will do the best during the final year to celebrate the masked legacy, J.R. East plans to hold a series of campaigns and events for fans leading up to the penguin’s official retirement at the end of 2026. I wish I could buy a modest house in Japan …honestly anywhere I would have grown up I wouldn’t excel at anything surprised I’m middle class here only because I’m clever. But that doesn’t cut it in Japan you b have to actually be smart which 99% of Japanese are … even though I’m not Japanese my personality would hopefully rub off on the women and possibly start a family 😅😊😊…..I just keep dreaming
When I was living in Japan, things like this stood out to me. That being the way even small things you see there tend to have been thought out and beloved aspects of people's day to day lives.
Its hard to think about all of those tiny things you see all the time everyday and assuming they will always be there and then one day their gone like they were never there to begin with. Reminds me of Toys R U and Blockbuster Video here in the US(Nostalgia😢). I've never ever seen a flying penguin acted out before though lol. I love penguins they very cute.😊 Anyone else fans of🐧
