A reboot of the legendary series, Tokyo Xtreme Racer sees you race across a faithfully reproduced Shuto Expressway at night, challenging rivals you encounter to head-to-head races by flashing your headlights.
Reminiscent of fighting games, a unique ‘Spirit Points’ system requires you to drain your rival’s energy bar by increasing the distance between you and your opponent.
Tokyo Xtreme Racer features over 60 customisable cars from Japanese manufacturers, with Honda joining the roster in the final 1.0 version released in September.
Tokyo Xtreme Racer’s PS5 release will mark the franchise’s return to PlayStation for the first time in over 20 years, since 2005’s Tokyo Xtreme Racer: Drift 2. The series has a long history on consoles, with games like Tokyo Highway Battle on the original PlayStation and Tokyo Xtreme Racer (known as Tokyo Xtreme Racer Zero in North America) on PlayStation 2.
It’s not the only Japanese-centric racer heading to PS5 next year, withJDM: Japanese Drift Master also being ported to Sony’s console next year. Forza Horizon 6, which is set in Japan, will also arrive on PlayStation 5 sometime after the initial Xbox and PC versions slated for 2026.
