During Sony’s Asian-focused State of Play today, the company announced a Japan-only region-locked PlayStation 5 at a very reasonable 55,000 Yen, or the equivalent of $350.

This PlayStation 5 is set to be the cheapest in Japan. It’s an excellent price for the console. Sony seems to be following Nintendo’s lead, releasing a region-locked Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive to Japan at a reduced price of around $324.

The PlayStation 5 is a digital console, and it’s unclear at this time whether a detachable disk drive can be installed. The hard drive size hasn’t been announced yet, but we believe this will be a standard Digital PlayStation 5 with an 825 GB hard drive with a region lock.

This PlayStation 5 will undoubtedly boost sales for Sony, which is aiming to hit 90 million units sold by the end of the year, as CFO Lin Tao revealed during the company’s financial report.

The PlayStation 5 has already hit a milestone, announcing that it has sold 84.2 million units, making it the best-selling console to date. A feat that Xbox has proudly held since the Xbox 360, which last reported selling an estimated 84 million units.

It’s no secret that tariffs have played a massive role in console price increases, impacting the three major manufacturers: both Microsoft and Sony raised the prices of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S/X, and the Nintendo Switch 2 also saw a steep launch price.
