鹿児島に屋台文化を根付かせたい!新たに立ち上げた「かごしまリアカー屋台」街をあげて盛り上がる話題のプロジェクト! Japanese Yatai Street food stall Kagoshima

After covering food stalls in Fukuoka, I took the Shinkansen straight to Kagoshima. This time, I was introduced to the Fukuoka food stall “Kagoshima Yatai Yokki” and came to photograph the “Kagoshima Handcart Food Stall” which started in May 2025. After arriving at Kagoshima Chuo Station , I first went to say hello to the union president, enjoyed some delicious Kagoshima food, and then photographed the preparations for the food stall business which was to be held the next day. In between business, the food stall owners gathered and transported their food stalls to the venue. Since the event period is fixed, the food stalls were pulled about 1 km to the food stall venue. Transporting the food stalls at night The reason for this is that they transport the food at times when there is less traffic on the roads. Currently, the “Kagoshima Handcart Food Stalls” consist of six food stalls and one tent stall. They are making a final sprint to the location where the food stalls will be operating. As the venue is rented on the “Restoration Hometown Road” along the Kotsuki River, the food stalls cannot be set up all the time, so they are transported in time for the event. Once the food stalls are loaded, each one returns to their shop. Event Schedule On the first day, we were closely attached to the food stall of the head of the Kagoshima Handcart Food Stalls Association, at his shop “Oniku no Kunio. ” “Oniku no Kunio,” located in the “Ichibangai Shopping Arcade” just next to Kagoshima Chuo Station, The restaurant has many specialty menu items, including high-quality black pork and fresh innards cooked on a charcoal grill. You can enjoy hearty grilled pork dishes at reasonable prices, such as the popular whole marinated skirt steak, thick-cut beef tongue, and extra-large spare ribs. Before the stalls open, ingredients and supplies are prepared and transported to the venue for opening in the evening. With the restaurant also preparing for lunch, preparations must be made in the morning. The Kagoshima Handcart Stalls are held at the “Rekishi Road: Ishin Furusato no Michi” (Rekishi Road, Restoration Hometown Road), right next to the Okubo Toshimichi statue . The stall that was delivered the other day is being prepared . This is the union leader’s stall. Near the venue, there is also a tenant warehouse where the supplies and equipment necessary for running the stalls are stored, with each stall storing its own equipment. To cut costs during the project’s launch, all six stalls were refurbished with the same structure. The newly refurbished stalls, designed with reference to Fukuoka’s stalls, feature windbreaks. It’s clear that everything has been carefully planned, including the water supply . The water supply at the venue is used for the water supply, which is essential for running the stalls. In the summer, they sprinkle water on the venue to prevent the temperature from rising, and operate as a countermeasure against the heat. I’ve seen stalls from all over Japan, but the stalls used at the Kagoshima Handcart Stall are about 1.5 times larger than those in Fukuoka. The Kure Stalls in Hiroshima are even larger, so they also take into consideration the size of stalls in each region. The stalls are fixed in place with jacks . As the venue is rented for the event, they cannot use the power source in the park, so they bring in generators and portable power sources to ensure electricity. The booths that previously operated from towable food trucks at the venue have now become tents, and they are preparing to open. Lanterns are being carried to be set up at the entrance to the venue. The lanterns at the entrance were installed by the Kagoshima Handcart Stalls. The stalls are lit up with lanterns bearing the names of the businesses that sponsored the stalls and the stall owners. A large lantern bearing the Kagoshima Handcart Stall logo has been set up. By the way, “Paydon” is a cashless app created by Kagoshima Bank. Once all the preparations are complete, the stall owners return to their shops and finish their lunch service. They then bring in ingredients and resume preparations before the stall opens at 4pm. After lunch service , they resume preparations again one hour before the stall opens. The other stall owners also prepare their stalls before lunch service or in between their regular business hours, so you can see the efforts and hard work that goes into this project. Here we introduce the stalls participating in the Kagoshima Handcart Stalls. This stall is run by “Gyoza no Mitchi,” a popular restaurant in Kagoshima City. Next is “Kanoya Chic,” a stall run by an owner who operates numerous restaurants in Kanoya City. Previously, they ran a trailer-type kitchen car. “KOFF” was open for business. This is “Kushiyaki Stand Koharu”, a food stall run by an owner who operates many restaurants, mainly yakiniku, in the prefecture. Next is “Tatsuo’s Food Stall”, a food stall run by an owner who operates an izakaya, bar, etc. This video focuses on “What a Nice Evening Today – Food Stall BOSS”, and “Tamari-chan Food Stall”, which has a wide variety of unique and intriguing food menus. Preparations for business are almost complete, and the generators are turned on to finish preparations for opening. The lanterns in the venue are lit, and it is time to open at 4:00 PM. All the stores are also ready to open, and it is finally time to open. The appetizers for this day were sweet potato chips and “Hyotan”, which is made from young gourds that have been bred for consumption and marinated in vinegar. Before you know it, the food stall is almost full. The most popular dishes are pork tongue with salt and green onions, and grilled skirt steak with salt. The grilled meat is given a charcoal flavor. Kagoshima has a wide variety of shochu brands, so you can try a variety of them. The dish is served with a homemade green onion and salt sauce. As the sun sets, the atmosphere becomes more like a food stall. “Uocchi,” a popular salami-style kamaboko made only at Hamasaki Kamaboko Shop in Kagoshima, is a popular local specialty that was even featured on the TV show “Matsuko no Shiranai Sekai.” Six food stalls lined up at the venue, with many customers enjoying themselves as they hopped from one stall to the next. It seemed like there were many tourists as well as locals. Customers kept coming in one after another. Grilled and vinegared offal . Oden, popular this season, comes in four varieties: daikon radish, egg, konjac, and satsumaage cheese. It’s served on an assortment of four varieties, topped with a sprinkling of bonito flakes and mustard . The specialty is motsu yakisoba, made with fresh pork innards provided by the shop. At this point, an order was placed for a dish I had been interested in: an arrangement of chikuwa (fish cake) and green laver, called “Emerald,” which is a combination of chikuwa and isobe- age (deep-fried seaweed). The restaurant is named “Emerald” because the abundant amount of green nori seaweed resembles grass. “Emerald” edamame beans, fried chikuwa with plenty of green nori seaweed . As the temperature drops, orders for “Oden” soar in popularity. You can enjoy your favorite meats, such as tongue, skirt steak, grilled pork belly, and sausages, grilled over charcoal . The popular “Uocchi” salami-style kamaboko (fish cake) and assorted oden dishes are also available . Motsuyaki soba and pork belly yakisoba are also recommended, topped with a fried egg. The “Rekishi Road Ishin Furusato no Michi” (Rekishi Road Restoration Hometown Road), which hosts the Kagoshima Handcart Stall, is open from 4:00 PM to 10:00 PM, so it’s nearly time for last orders. The last food order is at 9:15 PM, so I’d like to try some recommended food. The menu includes grilled and stir-fried dishes, charcoal-grilled and deep-fried dishes, oden, yakisoba, and other main dishes. The drink menu offers beer, sours, highballs, shochu, and soft drinks. The food stall also serves the menus offered at the yakiniku restaurant, ramen shop, and izakaya run by the association president. The menu features oden, fried noodles, and roasted pork. The oden, with its gentle broth and the added flavor of dried bonito flakes, is perfect for the cold season. The satsumaage is delicious, and in Kagoshima, the fluffy satsumaage is filled with melted cheese, and the konjac and eggs are also delicious. The specialty motsu yakisoba, made with fresh innards, was also served at the restaurant. I was debating between pork belly yakisoba or stir-fried innards with miso, but I ended up with a refreshing yakisoba made with plenty of vegetables and large cuts of innards, served with a special sauce instead of a sauce. The roasted pork served at “Ramen Tomi” is also served with a raw egg. The roasted pork egg is also delicious . We have to close and pack up by 22:00, so we need to pack up quickly. During the event schedule, we can temporarily remove the stall in a packed up state until the last day, but we have to pack up every business day, so it is very hard to run the stall while also operating the store. We have to finish packing up from the time we close by 22:00, when it is time to pack up. Currently, our opening hours are set from 16:00 to 22:00, so we hope that we will be able to operate for a little longer in the future. We hope that the handcart stalls that we have started will take root in Kagoshima as a new culture, and that more stalls will be set up in various places like in Fukuoka. You can follow the Kagoshima Handcart Stall events on social media, so why not come and enjoy a once-in-a-lifetime fun time at a Kagoshima food stall?

  1. 映像いつもありがとうございます。 日本に旅行に行く度に屋台を楽しみます。 行けない今は映像で満足しています。

  2. I’m glad to see this. Yatai culture is such a uniquely Japanese thing and something that should be preserved.

  3. How inspirational! It's quite interesting that each region has their own setup making it unique to that area. Each business puts a lot of work and effort into running their stall. Wishing them all the best! ❤
