Soft Rain and Mountain Fog, Quiet Trail Walk from Kibune to Kurama | Kyoto, Japan
A morning walk in light rain from Kifune Shrine, over Mt. Kurama via Kurama Temple and down to a small village by a river in the mountains of Kyoto, Japan. We start this morning at Kifune-jinja Rear Shrine and set off walking at dawn with lantern light along the Kibune River in light rain. A few traditional shops and inns sit beside the cascading river, as well as the iconic Kifune Shrine, which was uncrowded at this early hour. From there we cross Mt. Kurama to the small village on the other side of the mountain. Along way we pass numerous mountain shrines and temples, including Kurama-dera, with a monk at morning prayer. This is one of my favorite Kyoto walks, and the weather conditions were ideal with a mix of soft rain, mountain fog, and clearing skies.

The Kifune to Kurama hike, or vice versa, is an amazing hike through the mountains of Northern Kyoto. It's a little over 5k / 3 miles each way, depending on how many detours you make. This morning I parked my car at Kifune Rear Shrine, which is where we start the walk, and then headed up and over the mountain. On the way back I took the cable car to near the top to explore a bit more of the mountain and enjoy some different views. There is a hint of fall color to be seen in some of the leaves, but there is still much more to come in the weeks ahead. I hope you enjoy this morning walk on the trail.

Magical trails through temples and forests. Thank you so much for sharing, but how do you find these walking paths? Not the obvious trails like the beginning, but the smaller obscure path at the end.
