The beautiful mountain town of Pyeongchang in Gangwon-do Province, one of the host cities for next year’s PyeongChang 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, is inviting tourists to its yearly Hyoseok Cultural Festival.

Named after Lee Hyo-seok (이효석, 李孝石) (1907-1942), the author of “When Buckwheat Flowers Bloom” (메밀꽃 필 무렵) (1936), the festival is held at the author’s hometown in Bongpyeong-myeon Village, Pyeongchang, famous for its beautiful buckwheat flower fields. The town is especially famous for its spectacular nightscapes.

At the festival, you can tour Lee Hyo-seok’s birthplace and memorial hall, and visit the hands-on traditional activities booths that includes folk games, painting fingernails using balsam dyes and much more.

Don’t forget to try Bongpyeong’s famous buckwheat dishes, too. They’re delicious!
