15 Best Things To Do and Eat in Sapporo, Japan | Ultimate 3-Day Autumn Guide (Hokkaido)

Today we’re diving into Hokkaido seafood, hidden hot springs, and some of the best things you can eat and do right here in Saporo, including a visit to one of the biggest autumn food festivals in the country. Hey guys, welcome back. So, did you know that Sapora is so much more than just beer and snow? Especially during the autumn season, the whole city turns into a food paradise. We will spend three days here showing you what to eat, where to go, and why the autumn is a best season in Saporo. Big thank you to the Sapoto city for inviting us to experience Sapoto during the autumn season so that we can share this with you guys. Our journey starts here at Odori Park. This is located smack in the center of the city. It’s 1.5 km long and as you can see right behind us it is the location of the Saporo TV tower. The height is 147 and built in 1957. Built by Tatu Nato, same architect of Tokyo Tawa. [Music] So there’s an observation deck at 90 m and this is where we are right now. And from here you can see the entire city of Sapoto including the mountains in the backdrop and in one straight line you can see old park. It’s so beautiful. Yeah. And of course there is a souvenir store up here. That’s so cute. Don’t you think this is cute? It’s I think this is very cute. This is named TBI to unofficial mascot of Saporo TV. I can see the event, the food event. Wow, it’s huge. Huge. So long. Okay, so that’s going to be our next destination. All right, guys. This is the main reason why I was super excited to come to Sapoor this time. So, we are at the Autumn Festival, and this happens annually. It’s been happening since 2008, and it attracts around 2 million people every single year. We walked from the end to end and it’s huge. Yes, there are seven different sections. One area is all Hokkaido food and right now we’re like in the it’s not the campground but it’s like the meat area. But they made it look like a campground. It’s so cool. Oh, and one of your favorite areas. Bar area. The bar area. Craft beer, wines, all from Hokkaido in one place. This is amazing. I feel like I need an entire week. Yes. Yes. We decided to get something in the meat section. We bought beef sandwich from Hajime and they use Hokkaido beef from is east side of Hokkaido. So we got the one with cheese and it’s on shupan. Okay. You ready? Ready. Yeah. Let’s go for it. So much cheese. meat is of course it’s very tender and juicy. Very nice beefy taste. Look at how perfectly the meat is cooked. That’s amazing. So, let’s try Satoshi’s favorite part of the bread. I think I would say I like it. Fried bread crust. Oh, nice and crispy. Also sweet. Is it the chocolatey? It is. Those taste are chocolate. This is the Toyoni roast beef with horseradish sauce on a croissant. Look at all the slices of roast beef. just overflowing. How is it? Is it good? It smells good. It has a nice aroma like wasabi. Soy sauce. It mouth is beef. Oh wow. The roast beef is so tender. You can really really taste that horseradish. That beautiful horseradish flavor. This is like Hokkaido in one bite. So one area of this event is Hokkaido region section. We bought no crab from Metsu. Metsu is a east side of Hokkaido. Look at this beautiful crab meat. Very crabby crabby taste. This is so beautiful. Krabby taste. Super crabby taste. All right, guys. Dessert time. So, this is the Oasis P from Tsuki Terrace. Purple sweet potato and anko sweet potato parfait. It is melting. So, uh first of all, I want to take a bite of the sauce serve. M I’m glad I just took a bite of the soft serve because it is made with Hokkaido milk for sure. It is rich, creamy. So that’s the anoimo, I think. And then that is their purple sweet potatoes. I’m going to eat it together. Oh, it’s so good. Try it. You know how much I love sweet potatoes. Yep. But the anko emo is one of the most intensely flavored sweet potato in Japan. Good, huh? The beautiful sweetness. I don’t want to end with this because there are so much. Yes, I know. I know. But we have so much more to eat today. So, let’s go to the next place. Make sure to check out the former Hokkaido government building built in 1888. It consists of 2.5 million red bricks. It’s architecturally stunning and definitely worth a look. So, we came to Otarut, the sushi restaurant in Suskino. First, I have to drink beer. Of course, at Son style, and Shinichi ordered Japanese sake. I sure. Yep. I got the tokashi kamika taetsu, which is filled to the rim. It’s overflowing. Cheers, Kai. We ordered a whole bunch of things, guys. We got sashimi. We got this thing here. A lot of local specialties. This one is piran sashimi. It’s a blood fish. Very fresh and clean tasty. I’m going to challenge myself to try a local specialty. This is called nishir ki. So it’s basically fresh herring fermented in koji which is a rice brand. Oh, it’s it’s not very fishy at all. It’s just a really strong fermented flavor which isn’t too bad and fermented food really goes oake. So the other thing that’s really really famous here in Hokkaido is the potatoes and this is jagata. It’s so good. It has this really distinctive potato flavor. You got to try it. It’s so fluffy, delicious, but also the butter is just makes it creamy and just rich and delicious. We got another Hokkaido specialty which is corn. And this is corn tempura. Oh wow. Oh wow. The corn is so flavorful. And you really don’t need any salt because there’s so much flavor in the corn. This is called kumayi. It’s a kind of a cod. We’re trying all these Hokkaido specialties today. So there are three fins. So we don’t eat the fin. You’re supposed to break it apart in half like this. This is my first time. Oh, I see. Oh, it’s a fish. It’s a regular fish. Oh, yeah. And you have the bone there. So, you can easily peel off the bone like that. So, that’s the fish. Kumay, a type of cod in Hokkaido. M. is super super good. It’s the flavor is really nice. This one is a five sushi plate. I want to eat abalone. Texture is very distinctive umami of abalone. The flavor so good. This is s I think it’s some kind of flounder. M. That is so fresh. And you know what I like about this fish? It’s It has a bite to it. It’s not like super soft. That was an amazing sushi dinner. Seafood’s always amazing here in Hokkaido. Always fresh, always delicious. So satisfied. So, right behind me is this beautiful, stunning lake. This is Lake Saporo. Can you believe we’re still in Saporo? Amazing. I didn’t know there was so much nature. But we’re here because Satoshi is going to be participating in a sub sess session. Sup stands for stand up paddle boarding. Something we’ve never done. Obviously, I’m not going to be doing it, but this is something he’s always wanted to do. Look at that. You are dressed and ready for the occasion. Little bit nervous. Yeah. Yeah. But I’m excited. Mhm. You got your life on. Mhm. Mhm. And ready. These are the subboards. So, wow. They look like uh like thicker surfboards kind of. So, guys, as you can see, you really have to be confident in your physical abilities in order to do this, I think. But, uh they say that uh sup isn’t too difficult. How are you doing? How are you doing? I don’t know. You don’t know. Careful. But right now, Satoshi is uh taking his first steps doing sub. He’s been practicing for about oh my gosh uh 5 minutes, 20 minutes. You know, it’s been about 20 minutes. Oh. Oh my god, he fell. No, no, no, no, no, no, no. Please fell. You did a great job. I know. I’m very bad. No, you did a good job. You did a great job. It was fun, but I didn’t ping. Just wind was pushing me. It was just blowing you, right? Well, I think he did a great job. Yep. This is my first time. So I dropped once but but it was fun. The water was not so cold. By the way, this company is called Blue Marble and the instructors really really good. We we talked to him later and he said that he told him to stand up because he figured he could do it. No, you did good though. Are you glad you did it? Yep. Yeah. Yep. Yes. Would you do it again? Well, you don’t have to answer that right now because right now uh we need to go to the onsen to warm up a little bit. I’m hungry after all the ping. Yeah. Did you have a good time? Yes. It look really nice though. Yeah. Yeah. A little bit nervous. Little bit nervous. So anyway, we are here at our lunch destination. We’re here at Ainohito Yukinoi, which means rainies days and snowy days. That’s such a cozy name. This restaurant is a specialized woodf fired pizza and gelato. They are using Hokkaido wheat and local ingredients. We ordered two pizza. One is amayuki jetaka pizza and other one is seasonal. It’s mushroom and smoked chicken pizza. So, you want to start off with this one, the special one or this one? I like the special one. The special one. Yeah. Okay, let’s do that. This one is made with parmesan cheese, onion, and some vegetables, tamo, proto, mozzarella cheese, egg. M. This dough is fluffy and soft, but also sak nice texture. Tomato acidity is really good. Combine all ingredients into one. Wow, it’s a very good combination. So, I got the seasonal pizza and it looks delicious. This one is a mixture of mushrooms and you have chicken. Ooh. Okay. This is a thin type of pizza. M. That is unique but delicious. M. That pizza crust has such nice wheat flavor because they’re using Hokkaido wheat. I don’t think it’s like mozzarella cheese. Maybe it’s a mixture of mozzarella cheese and some kind of other cheese, but it is so flavorful. Chicken pieces are super tender. That is super super flavorful. Really delicious. One of the best pizzas I’ve ever had. [Music] Okay, that was a really, really good lunch. And I think we need to burn out some calories. So now we’re going to explore a little bit of this uh little intimate uh onsen town. This onsen town is quite different from like Hakuna for example. But there are lots of hot springs all around. A lot of foot baths like this one right here. Here’s a foot bath. Public foot bath, right? Yeah. Genen. Oh yeah. Auto spring is coming out from here. And this is the park of that. H. So it is kind of like a park. So you have the foot bath right here and you have the the onen water the hot spring water coming up from here. Wow. It looks hot at Oh, I wonder if that’s the source. I It’s coming from there. And he h Oh, this is the guy. He is the founder. He is the founder of Joanke Onsen Town. Here are trails where you can walk around. I think Satoshi’s going to go into the foot bath right now. Ah, this is so relaxing. Here’s a waterfall here. And even this waterfall is hot springs. Yes, you can see steam coming out. Satoshi’s enjoying his bath. This bath we can enjoy hut bath. Look, look at this. Look at this. Yes. And it’s quite hot. It’s very hot. Look at that. Look at that. Oh no, your feet is so red. Wow, that looks hot. This one is called No. Here we go. I hope it’s not too hot. That’s good. [Music] Perfect. How is it? Not so hot. Not so hot. Yeah. Oh, that’s great. This is great. The place I took was so hot. Yeah, this is nice. And we have a really nice view here, too, with nice music in the background. Oh, this is nice. Now it is time to check into our accommodations for the evening. We’re staying at Joan Kuruga Resort Spa, Morino. The name means song of the forest. And as soon as you enter the lobby, you can see why. The design makes it feel like you’re in the middle of a forest. It’s cozy and very Hokkaido. Welcome. It’s a really beautiful room. This is the whole room. You have a desk here with two chairs. And the chairs are quite nice. And you have two beds here. Nice size. You have a nice little sofa here. Like a love seat. This is our television. Oh, look. We even have a massage chair. It’s for me. That’s for you. Yes. I did this today. Yes. Yes. Yes. You deserve it. No. Tada. I’m ready. Okay. Let’s go to bath. So, it’s dinner time, guys. We feel so good and we’re so hungry after that amazing onsen bath, which was actually one of the best onen we’ve ever been to. Seriously. Okay, now this buffet here is amazing. There’s so many things to choose from. Just the appetizers alone, there are like two counters of appetizers. There’s a Chinese and Japanese area. They have live kitchen. They have the chefs making uh steak, I think, as well as pizza. We got to get pizza later. Let’s Let’s start with um the appetizers here. Look at this. We have this. This is katsu, which is bonito with a lemon. Is it season right now? You know it is. That is so fresh. Look at this beautiful autumn thing. It looks like dessert, doesn’t it? It’s like cheese on the bottom. So I guess it is like a savory [Music] sweet um appetizer. My plate is mostly consist of Japanese and Chinese. Here is Hokkaido. Samo must be nice. Every sashimi is really fresh, tasty shrimp bump. [Music] This is the shrimp and chili mayonnaise sauce. M. This is a guagi beef. M. Very juicy and tender. M. It’s actually really good. Wonder if I should get more. My pizza arrived. So, it’s a it’s a small like mini pizza. Then I chose a tomato sauce. And this cheese is mozzarella cheese. You could choose parmesan. You could choose like another one. It’s okay. It’s okay. It’s like It’s like kids pizza, but you know, it’s fun. It’s a lot of fun. You can customize. What I like about this dessert bar is that they actually have dessert that they sell in their own cake shop. I got creme brulee, the strawberry shortcake, which they sell in their shop. This tiramusu they also sell. And this is their nama chocolate on a stick. These are some of their cookies that they sell in their shop. Uh they also sell this in the shop that is like a strawberry macaron. Another macaron. Let’s start off with their strawberry shortcake. M actually that’s really good. The cream is really nice and the sponge is fluffy and so beautiful. Let’s try the tiramisu. This one’s also sold in their cake shop. So I’m kind of looking forward to this. I have high expectations now. [Music] That’s good. Chocolatey and nice coffee and creamy and rich. That is good. Oh, it’s 8:00. So, there is an illumination until 9 9:50. That’s right. We got to go. We have to go. We have to go. Let’s go. Let’s go. All right, guys. So, we are walking towards the venue where the illumination is being held. The name is Joan K Nature Luminar. I know this goes all the way to the bridge, right? Yes. Yes. Yeah. So, I think it’s going to be a nice walk. Mhm. It’s beautiful. I love that it’s quite empty. It’s not super crowded. If you have something like this in Tokyo, it’s usually super crowded. This is a kappa. Kappa is living in river. On the head, they have this type of water saucer. If the water sa become dry up, they die. This is so cool. It’s like an attraction like in the middle of nature. Can you guys hear the river which is flowing right on the side of where we’re walking? Look how dark this pathway is. Oh, look at that. Oh, I love that. Wow, that’s beautiful. So, this is nature projection. Projection mapping on the ground. This is nice. Look at the forest. Are we at the bridge? Is this the bridge? I think so. Yeah, I think this is the suspension bridge. So, we’re actually walking across a suspension bridge is shaking. That’s kind of interesting. Yeah, it is kind of interesting. But, you know, the lighting it it’s it makes it kind of surreal, a little bit dizzy. Wow. Look. Look at that. You can’t really see it, but this is the river. It’s a valley. Amazing. Wow. And I think we’re almost at the end of this illumination walk. Just crossed over the bridge. So, we just came back to the hotel and we discovered until 10 p.m. they have like a marshmallow roasting thing that you can participate in. And so, this like brings me back right to childhood. Mine is completely burnt. That’s okay. I [Music] marshmallow fluff. That was another amazing day here in Sapoto. We have one more day to go tomorrow. So stay tuned. We’re going to get some sleep because we have a pretty big day ahead. Good morning everybody. I had such a great sleep. I slept through the night. I slept like a baby and I feel so refreshed this morning. And this is day three, our last day here in Saporo. And this day is all about history, culture, and of course lots of good food. I can’t wait to experience this day with you guys. It’s breakfast time and it’s a buffet affair once again. And once again, I’m blown away by how much variety there is. So, I decided to get this freshly cooked rice. And to accompany my rice, I got a whole bunch of Japanese things like grilled fish and pickles. I also got some bacon, salted vegetables. That pumpkin looks especially yummy. And I got myself a small bowl of salad. So I got Okayaou. This is rice glue, miso soup, onent tamago, ch salmon. We’re going to go to the museum of beer. I will drink craft of beer. Before we get the day started, I just have to say how beautiful this hotel stay was. Both of us, we thought to ourselves, we really want to come back to this place again. It really is a very relaxing place. The whole hotel is surrounded by mountains and of course you have hot springs all over the place. I mean, just look out the window from our seat and you can see the forest. It’s just so beautiful. Anyway, cannot wait to get this day started. So, the next stop is a Saporo Beer Factory. It’s the only beer museum here in Japan. It was first built originally as a sugar factory in 1890 and later it became a part of Saporo Buries and since 1987, it’s been preserved as a museum. You will learn all about Japanese beer history and you will know why the Saporo is a one of the biggest beer brands in Japan. Right. And every time we come to Saporo, we almost always visit this place because obviously he loves beer. Yes. And frankly, uh the beer here, you can get fresh beer and it’s actually quite delicious. Yes. It’s different. It’s different from the can. Cheers. Come by. Cheers everybody. Oh yeah, this is so flavorful. You can really taste the hops in this one. Very refreshing. Yeah. Temperature, whatever. It’s really good. If you like beer and if you want to learn about the history of Sapora beer, definitely check this place out and enjoy beer. Yes. So, if you’re hungry after visiting the museum and the beer tasting, we recommend trying out Jingghisan, which is a local specialty. It is really delicious. I personally never really like lamb until I tried jingishan. This is a platter of the lamb meat that’s sliced. It’s a classic version. This is a classic way. And this is the sliced fresh lamb. And we got some assorted vegetables, which is super important. And then we got the sauce to go with the lamb. Okay. Of course, you got to get kasaporto beer. Cheers, guys. Cheers. Cheers. I’m already feeling good from that beer tasting. All right, let’s dig in. This is a very important and very unique thing. It’s this vegetables. Put the vegetables on top of this grill or so. Arrange the vegetables around the perimeter of the grill. then cook this meat. First, let’s try the classic one. This is the original jingish style in Okaido in Saporo. I heard the good way is put this meat on this vegetables. I like this and transfer this juicy lamb umami into this vegetables. And while resting this meat, cook the next one. So this one is fresh one. And while cooking the next meat, eat first meat. Okay. So I think this one is ready. This one is ready. So dive into this sauce. [Music] I like this. The flavor of lamb is a packed with umami. Okay, let’s try this. The classic piece of lamb meat like m. Oh wow, that’s actually really good. I thought it was going to be more gy, but it’s not gy at all. You do taste a little bit of that lamb flavor, but it’s very pleasant. That’s delicious. I got to say the sauce is really good, too. So, this one is the fresh lamb meat, not the classic. Here we go. M. Oh, yeah. This one is not gy at all. And it’s also very, very tender. I think that’s my favorite. And of course, you guys want to eat the vegetables here, okay? You got the bean sprouts, you got bell peppers, zucchini, and onions. And you want to eat this with the sauce here. It is delicious. And if you guys want, you can order rice as well. This is like the best lunch ever. So, this is one place that was recommended to us by Saporo City. This is Nakajima Park. And this park is located smack in the center of the city. We didn’t know about this place. It’s easy to access by subway from Saporo station. It’s maybe only 5 minutes or so. Yeah, you can even walk over from Suzukino. Yeah, but it is beautiful. There’s a lake in the middle of the park which is stunning and you can even rent canoes if you want. So, right now it’s September so it’s a perfect temperature. Um, lots of greenery and lots of uh plants and flowers in bloom. Yeah, watching plants that’s very fun for me. No, it’s such a beautiful park. I don’t know why we never come here before. Inside of Nakajima Park, there is a building called Hohi Kan. This Hohan is built in 1880 as a western style hotel by Kaitakushi, the Hokkaido’s development commission. I especially love the color of the facade of the building. It’s ultramarine blue and it is really beautiful. Very beautiful. I love that color. You can also enter the building itself and you can see all the details of the ceilings to the staircases. is there’s even an old grandfather clock and you can see the various rooms as well. In fact, even emperor Maji once stayed here. There’s even a reproduction of the room where he stayed. Today, it’s a national important cultural property. It’s beautifully preserved with the chandeliers and the old western decor on the inside. It’s a beautiful addition to this already beautiful park in the middle of Saporo. You really like this park, don’t you? I really do. It’s so beautiful and peaceful. I could stay here the entire day. But we have to go to the next place. That’s right. Where are we going? Moyama Observatory. A That’s right. We got the observatory. That’s a must. Let’s go. All right. So, we are here at one of the highlights of this trip. Yes. This is the station of the ropeway to Moyama Observatory. So, the best way to get up here is by riding the ropeway. And from the ropeway you already get an amazing view of Sapoto city. And after that you transfer to the cable car which is a very short ride. U very smooth as well. Not scary. If I can do it, you can do it. The role has been in operation since 1958. And then they uh refurbished it in 2011. That’s why it’s brand new actually. And this observatory is the height is 531 m from the sea level. And you can see a beautiful beautiful Sapur city. You can you can see like everything. You can see uh the city. You can’t really see Oli Park. We’re trying to look for the park. We couldn’t but we found you can see the uh Nakajima Nakajima Park from here. You can kind of see the station, Saporo station. And on the other side you can see the mountain range. All the mountains. Mountains. Yeah. This side it’s the Joank area. Oh, I see. The the hot spring area where we were. Really? Oh, how interesting. We were here just the other day. Yep. Wow. This is beautiful. I don’t know which side I like more. I I I like this view as well, but I heard at night time, uh, the city views really beautiful. I think next time I’d like to come at night time. I try to make it up here next time because Saporo, it is definitely worth coming up here. So beautiful. So, dinner time. Dinner time. Okay. So, here is Sapuro. What do you want to eat? Ooh. Soft serve for dinner, right? For dinner. Um. Hm. Ramen. Ramen. Another thing. Soup curry. Finally. Soup curry. Yes. Soup curry is something you have to eat here in Saporo because it was invented here. It’s popular all over the country now, but this is where it all started. And today, we’re going to go to this place that’s supposed to be one of the best. So when you come to a soup curry restaurant, probably the hardest part is how to order the soup curry cuz it’s a little bit different. Usually you choose, for example, this place you choose a soup base. So I got a standard and Satoshi got a uh red hot, but you can also get green coconut and coconut as well. And then you choose the type that you want. I just had to get a vegetarian today. And then you choose your spice level as well as the rice size. And it looks beautiful. Check it out. Look at the variety of vegetables in here. I see eggplant, corn, daicon, radish, bell pepper, tomato, that’s bock, pumpkin, okra, mushroom, maybe that’s potato, and that’s my rice. But before I begin, I’ll going to take a uh sip of my soup, my curry soup here. So once again, soup curry was invented here in Saporo. So it’s something you have to try. [Music] Ooh. M. Actually, the spice level is perfect for me. It has just the right amount of kick. Maybe I spoke too soon because it it is it is getting there. But it’s super super flavorful. I can taste the cardamon and the garam marsala. This is a base of chicken soup with with a variety of herbs, but it’s super super flavorful. I can actually just drink the soup and call it a day. Some people say you have to dip it into the soup. Some people say you uh dip the curry in the spoon and then you eat some rice. But I think as long as uh it goes into your mouth, I mean, that’s the main thing, right? Okay, here we go. There we go. Rice and soup combined. M that’s really really good. So mine is red hot soup chicken and vegetable curry. The spice level is number six and the rice size is medium much much spicier. How is it? Oh, [Music] it’s spicy. because it’s spicy but nicely mixed with the variety of spices. This is very good. M. So, the curry place was supposed to be the last thing on the video, but we got to make this guy happy. We’re going to go to a craft beer place in Susukino. And yeah, are you looking forward to it? Yes. The Hokkaido’s craft bean scene is quite big. That’s true. I have to drink. I have to drink craft beer. Okay, let’s do it. So to wrap up our trip, we’re here at Tap Room Cotan. This place serves craft beers and it’s a really really cool place. Good vibes and looks like they have good beer too. They have 12 beers on top from IPA Pna or other things. All beers are brewed in Hokkaido. So I got it’s a pa type. This one is using 100% Hokkaido kamuran hop and shini got hap. Cheers. Very refreshing beer. It’s pizza but it has so much umami inside. Nice hot flavor. This is very refreshing and nice beer. I like this. My beer has a flavor of husk which is a fruit in Hokkaido. Delicious. It has like a little bit of acidity and fruity. It’s delicious. And for dessert, we’ve got a chestnut and almond cream glass. The last food in Hokkaido. M. Oh wow. I just got a whole chestnut in my mouth. That smells really good. Like chest ice cream. Saporo is like a treasure box of delicious food and amazing experience. That’s so true. We hope watching this video made you guys want to visit Sapoto. We love autumn here.
