Netflix has announced its next original anime film titled Cosmic Princess Kaguya!, set to premiere on January 22, 2026. The project is the feature-length directorial debut of Shingo Yamashita, best known for his opening animations in Jujutsu Kaisen, Chainsaw Man, and Urusei Yatsura.

Reimagining The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter which is widely regarded as Japan’s oldest folktale, Cosmic Princess Kaguya! has elements of mythology with sci-fi themes, music, and “contemporary animation.” The story takes place in a virtual world called Tsukuyomi, where a live performance takes place through a mix of hand-drawn and digital animation, infused with Yamashita’s signature fluid motion, emotional beats, and vivid camera work, Netflix revealed.

The film stars Yuko Natsuyoshi as Kaguya, Anna Nagase as Iroha, and Saori Hayami as Yachiyo.

Music plays a central role in the film, with contributions from renowned Vocaloid and internet music producers such as ryo (supercell), kz (livetune), 40mP, HoneyWorks, Aqu3ra, and yuigot.

Animation production is handled by Studio Colorido (Penguin Highway, A Whisker Away) alongside Yamashita’s own Studio Chromato. Character design is credited to Hechima (The Idolmaster Gakuen) and Akihiro Nagae (Drifting Home).

“This is my first full-length original animated film,” Yamashita said in Netflix’s statement. “I poured into it everything I’ve learned about visual expression, my love for unique characters, and my deep affection for the internet culture that’s continued since the 1990s. It’s a bright, fun film — so please sit back, relax, and enjoy it!”
