TOKYO: Japan has decided to revise the Implementation Plan for the International Peace Cooperation Assignments in the Sinai Peninsula to extend the dispatch period of personnel by one year, the Foreign Ministry stated on Friday.

Japan has dispatched Japan Ground Self Defense Force personnel to the Multinational Force and Observers (MFO) since April 2019. Four staff officers are currently in charge of liaison and coordination with Egypt and Israel concerning the implementation of MFO’s ceasefire monitoring activities and engineering support at the MFO Headquarters in Sharm El Sheikh, in the southern part of the Sinai Peninsula.

Japan views the dispatch of staff officers to the MFO as a contribution to the peace and stability of the Middle East. It is also seen as promoting collaboration with other contributing countries and providing opportunities for human resource development.

At a cabinet meeting on Friday, Japan decided to revise the Implementation Plan for the International Peace Cooperation Assignments in Sinai Peninsula to extend the dispatch period by one year until November 30, 2026.
