The New National Theatre Tokyo will stream Toshio Hosokawa’s “Natasha” worldwide following its acclaimed August 2025 premiere.

The opera will be available to stream for free on OperaVision and NNTT Stream from Dec. 12, 2025 at 7 p.m. CET through June 12, 2026 at 12 p.m. CET. The recording date was August 17, 2025, with a running time of approximately two hours and 35 minutes.

The production, conducted by Kazushi Ono and directed by Christian Räth, was named a finalist in the World Premiere category at the 2025 International Opera Awards. Ilse Eerens stars as Natasha, with Hiroka Yamashita as Arato and Christian Miedl as Mephisto’s Enkel. The cast also includes Mari Moriya, Akiko Tomihira, Tang Jun Bo, Timothy Harris, and Masanori Oishi. The New National Theatre Chorus and Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra perform under chorus master Kyohei Tomihira.

The opera features a libretto by Yoko Tawada and explores exile, memory, and humanity’s relationship with nature through multiple languages, including Japanese, German, and Ukrainian. The story follows Natasha, a displaced wanderer, and Arato as they journey through visions of suffering and renewal led by a Mephistophelean figure.
