BEST Kyoto Travel Guide: 4 Days Eating, Exploring & Experiencing Kyoto

Hey, let’s go. Go to America. Keeper, keeper, keeper. What is this thing? Chicken tongue. What is that animal? And what’s happening right now? I Oh my gosh. This is it. This is so cool. I am here in Kyoto, one of the most traditional and beautiful cities here in Japan. And if you came from my last guide and you’re visiting Tokyo, check that out first because this is the second part of our Japan trip. We took the high-speed train from Tokyo yesterday and that thing was crazy. It was literally going 200 m an hour. It’s about 2ish hours. We’re about to experience all the things that this lovely town has to offer and we’ll be exploring different things around the area. And we’re staying here at the Moxy Hotel. I chose this hotel because it’s very conveniently located which makes it really easy for us to get all around Kyoto and explore it. It’s right near Nij Station which takes you like pretty much anywhere in Kyoto. Our room is modern but also has slight Japanese touches. And it’s really funny because you actually get pajamas here. I’ve never seen that in a hotel before. So they give us pajamas to sleep in. Oh yeah. Look at these. Come on. Oh my gosh, you’re all the rage, which is apparently something that is very traditionally Japanese. Big fan of this hotel. Today we’re going to see the sites of Kyoto. I have to say one of the things that I really love about Japan, it’s so quiet. Like the value on silence is impeccable. We are walking through the city right now and there is no sound. It’s so quiet. Like pretty much everywhere. Unless you’re in a bustling market. It’s so peaceful here in Japan. If you’re looking to get away for peace, this is the spot to come. What is this place called? 4.9. That is so rare. There’s like 600 reviews. This is cute. So, it’s all movie themed. That’s what it is. And he handed me this thing which just says favorite movies. Uh Movie Guy. Movie guy for sure. Who also loves coffee. That’s the I love it. single and ready to mingle. Oh, thank you. A maple latte. You like it? Oh, yeah. Good. Very nice. So, to get around Kyoto and even Tokyo, if you haven’t seen the Tokyo guy, check that out. The best way is using the public transportation. It’s incredibly efficient. And in Kyoto, they have a lot of buses and they also have a train system. To use the train system, you have to buy uh a Suika card, which you load with cash. You cannot use a credit card for this, by the way. And then you just scan it. It’s really easy. So, let’s take the subway and see our first site. We have arrived at the Higashi. What? Higashiyama. We’re at the Higashi World area. Yes. And this is where there’s a lot of shrines. Yeah. And the first step is to get there, you got to cross this bridge with no rails. What could go wrong? Wow, look at that. You don’t have to enter this way. But this is just more fun in my opinion. By the way, if you want to get a kimono here, this is the area you definitely get it cuz literally everyone has kimonos on and they have a million stores that sell them and they’re all like real deal quality. It seems like everyone wears kimonos, too. So, when you’re going to the shrine or you’re kind of taking a walk, both tourists and locals alike will actually be wearing them. So, that’s the fun thing that you can see. You can rent them for photos as well. I’m sure some people have their own, but tourists and locals alike like to do it and go about the city and take their pictures. So, something everyone could enjoy. We made it to the Yasaka Shrine. This one’s so pretty. This is popular for this festival they have been doing here since 860. That’s right. 860, not 1860. It’s to ward off epidemics. So, this spot was a hot spot in CO, I bet you. Um, people come here to pray for fortune and beauty. So, let’s pray for both of those things. We’ve been to a few different shrines here in Japan and I have to say this is the first one where I’ve seen this unique prayer ritual where they pray and they shake the rope and the like canisters hanging. I imagine it would bring some type of prosperity or good fortune. A lot of the temples they like you donate money and then you just like do this clapping ritual. Right behind the shrine is this beautiful park. This is the Maruyama Park. And look at this. It’s like traditional Japanese koi pond. You see the koi swimming here. A lot of people doing photo shoots in this area. Like absolutely very peaceful. I feel like we should have a picnic here when it’s not as hot. Oh my god, you have like the willow trees. Like I feel like I’m in a painting. This is gorgeous. We have finally reached the original destination and it’s Ninen Zaka. This is a really pretty like viewpoint where you see this temple rising from the city and this whole area has all traditional like Japanese houses. It feels like you’re in an old little village. You’re going to find this all along the Ninan Zaka path. And this is also a great spot for shopping. Although I can’t guarantee if the price is going to be good. I feel like it’s definitely more on the touristy side. These crowds are crazy. Yeah. Like we can’t even move. So much traffic. Unreal. Meanwhile, I am a member of that crowd cuz I also want to go see. The irony is palpable. Beautiful view. Photo not possible. I don’t think even AI Photoshop can handle this. We are hot. The camera’s dying. It’s time for a matcha. We got green tea. Felt rejuvenating. But honestly, we’re so hungry. I realized we actually haven’t really eaten that much today, just like some snacks. So, when in Japan, you got to check off all those food boxes. We’ve done sushi. Now, it’s time for ramen. This one is called Noodle Shop Maruto. And I love that we can order right from this kiosk. Behind me, they are making the chicken soup broth. And the biggest pot I’ve ever seen in my life. And the guy is mixing it with just like a giant wooden stick. It looks like like there’s not even a spoon on the end. It’s like all literally made by hand right here. I think I could fit into that pot. What is this thing? Chicken tongue. No, it’s not. Don’t tell me that. Never had that flavor before. kind of tastes like a carrot, but it’s like seems like it’s been soaked in in soy sauce for like a very long time because namely the flavor is soy sauce. That is rich. Wo! You see that steam? Getting like a facial over here. Slurping. That’s really good. Put bisel paste in spoon. Mix it with the soup. Okay. Group the noodles and eat them together with the spoon. That is so good. Oh my god, that is so much better with this sweet miso from Kyoto. Okay, so after that ramen, we did a little shopping in the Higashiyama Award. Such great shopping. Behind me, this is the Nyoman Gate at Kiu Mizadera Temple. And now there are some interesting folklore mysteries surrounding this particular gate. Whenever you see a gate entering a temple here on either side of the entranceway, they have two king warriors guarding it. One warrior’s mouth is open symbolizing the beginning and one is closed symbolizing the ending. So it’s like a full loop. But there’s a really great scenic view of Kyoto from the top. So let’s climb up. Look at that view. You can see the whole city from here. This is a UNESCO World Heritage site. And Louis just informed me that on this lovely information thing. It says that the incredible part about the structure of this is that not a single nail was used in building it. I don’t even think I could build that with nails. Honest. I couldn’t build it for sure. They made it 400 years ago. It almost makes me like wonder was construction better then? The Egyptians made the pyramids just with blocks. The Japanese made these structures with no nails. Pretty crazy, right? There’s no better way to end the night than a rooftop bar in my opinion. Especially a rooftop bar with temple views. I mean, come on. This bar is called K36. Beautiful rooftop. This is their acai beer mixed with a peroni. That’s good. Really? So cold and refreshing. This is the searoo. This has rum, elderflower, liquor, pineapple juice, blue carousel, which is this one. Rosemary tonic. Oh wow, this is absolutely amazing. Highly recommend coming here. Life changingly good. This is a good night. And with that, I’ll see you tomorrow, too. Today we are doing a day trip to Nara Uji and Fushimi. I apologize if I pronounced that wrong. I probably did. We booked it through Kuk. Really easy. We’re going to get on the bus right here. Drive an hour to N. And apparently they have like these deer that bow there. I’m very curious what that’s about. But first, we need some coffee and some breakfast to get on this bus because this is going to be a long day. So, let’s get there. So, one of the amazing things about convenience stores like 7-Elevens or Family Marts here in just Japan as a whole is they have so much food here. A gazillion options. Like all of this stuff that you know they can heat anything in here. This is grilled ginger pork, a stew, I don’t even know. Loaded potato salad. It’s a pork katu. It’s like a pork cutlet sandwich. Pork cut sandwich. Breakfast of champs. Yeah. And the weird thing is the food’s actually good. This whole thing is all heated. Like it’s hot in here and it’s just keeping all these cans nice and warm. You know, my personal favorite though, one of these. I love these. They’re like so easy just to eat on the go, which apparently is not acceptable in this culture. So, I would not eat on the go, but if you need to eat, grab one of these. Okay. See you soon, Naru. This has started out well. We got off the bus and got attacked by a deer. Lou, that’s it. Oh no, that’s not good. That deer is not happy. Not happy. Flavor of the food. Oh my gosh. Oh, look. It’s a baby deer. Maybe it won’t attack us. You may be wondering why there are so many deer in this area. Hi. We just charged in. I know, right? The word n actually means do not. There was two armies that were fighting here. And before they like came together to fight, a bunch of deer got in the path. And so the armies interpreted that as the deer telling them to stop fighting. Ever since then, they have just let deer roam free here. And they call the area n as do not like do not fight. Got the cakes. They love these cakes. I thought they were supposed to be polite. Okay. Bow. Oh boy. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Ah, their pets. Okay. Okay. This is crazy. We can’t even like go anywhere. They’re just like attacking us. Ew. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. I Ow. Ow. Okay. Okay. There you go. Okay. Dude, they started like eating my clothes. They’re not being polite. I was told they were supposed to be polite. They literally bit me like through my P. Like look at this. Hi. This is for you. A See, this one’s so sweet. Let’s go. Let’s go. It’s following us. Oh my god. Now there’s a bunch following us. This is stressful. Honestly, this is I’m a little anxious now. This is like I think I’m good. I feel like I’m being attacked. Okay, here you go. I would not bring your kids here. They were like running after you. Oh my gosh. Oh my gosh. Oh no. Get out of here. Okay, you win. you in. I’m sorry. There you go. We don’t have anymore. We don’t have anymore. Hi. Hi. Hi, baby. I’m sorry. I don’t have any. The babies are fine. It’s the big ones that you got to watch out for. Is it actually bowing to you? Oh, nice. That’s the first time I’ve seen a bow. Oh, look at that. You’re good at this. First thing it did to you, Rachel. My ass cheek. It put the whole cheek in its mouth. Oh my god, we’re surrounded. He’s bringing more stuff. Bring more. Be mentally prepared. They will bite you. It’s not Sometimes they will bite you. So, after being harassed by deer, there’s a lot of historic sites in this area. And this is the Toai Temple. This is originally a Buddhist temple that was built in the 700s, making it super freaking old. Really gorgeous architecture here. This is actually the third version of it though because it was burnt down by a fire twice. The most recent version we’re seeing right here. This was built in the 1500s. And inside they have the largest Buddha statue in Japan. Oh my gosh, this Buddha is enormous. Way bigger than I even expected. Said that when you donate any yen that starts with a five, it is good luck. So, we’re donating this coin right in here. I get good luck now hopefully. And with that, we are about to miss our bus. So, Lou, I think we need to literally run back. Okay, let’s run. The next trip we’re doing on the bus is an hour and a half, which I’m looking forward to after running a mile to get to the bus. Got to work for these views. We just arrived in Uji, which is where matcha tea comes from. Super cool. We definitely need to try that at some point while we’re here. In the meantime, we are checking out some of the temples here. They’re so gorgeous. The architecture is absolutely stunning. So pretty. This place is literally matcha heaven. Like there is matcha pasta, matcha ice cream, matcha beer, matcha buildings. They’re made out of matcha buildings. That’s good. Matcha is like rejuvenating for your soul. So, I think this is going to be good for like cleansing. Matcha beer. Oh my god. Oh my gosh. This looks delicious. Wow. A iced matcha green tea with ice cream on top. Ooh, that’s nice. It’s like um literally tastes like a matcha tea but with more of a sweetness to it. Really good. And we have matcha noodles. It almost has like a flavor of like a wheat noodle I feel like would be the most similar way to compare it. Now we have the dumplings here which also come with a side of matcha powder cuz we don’t have enough matcha. We are at stop number three and this time we are back in Kyoto, but a further point of Kyoto than where we’ve been throughout the last couple days. And we’re visiting a site that I’ve wanted to see literally like my entire life. It’s called Ushimi Unari Taisha. I hope I said that right. Actually really Thank you so much. And this is those beautiful traditional orange looking gates. And the gates are the entrance of a shrine. The first one. I am cleansed. Oh my gosh. This is it. This is so cool. I feel like I’m in an orange tunnel. I there’s so many of these gates because there’s so many companies that donated and they all wanted the good fortune cuz essentially donating a gate which is very expensive by the way brings you good fortune. I wonder how long this is. 2 hours with all the gates. You’re kidding me. So we’re not going that far and we’re going to walk. It’s 2 hours of walking with gates. So this leads to the top of a mountain. Wow. There’s less people the further you get in. This is good tips because honestly most places like this that you see like on Instagram all the time, they’re just crowded everywhere. But maybe this is not as bad. We just took 100 million photos in the gates. That’s pretty much what we did. But you can turn around at any point and walk back down. But there’s a bunch of other like temple elements you can do. And if you want to walk all the way to the mountain, you can do that. We don’t have time, but if I had time, I would. Look at these. These are cheese patties essentially like mozzarella sticks but in the shape of coins. Oh yes. Oh my god. Lou, don’t choke on it. You’re going nuts. Look at that. The patty around it is like a pancake and then there’s cheese on the inside. Two things I love. It’s like that sweet and that savory. Really good. We’re here at Yoshiharu, which is a solid ramen spa here in Kyoto. Looks solid. There is this sign on it. I started drinking Ra. Sometimes I drink at a ramen shop. Let’s have a passionate discussion. Yep. I just love how that is the translation. Okay, so what is this app? So, Tab Log is an app if you’re in Japan or other countries. Otherwise, you can use the web version. And it’s similar to Yelp in the United States, but it is essentially what the Japanese use for rating restaurants, reviewing restaurants, and making reservations. The Japanese will only give a five star if there quite literally is nothing to improve upon. Like, it needs to be pure perfection with an actual rainbow of like unicorn farts coming through at the same time. The place that we’re at, I think, is a 3.6, which is considered to be very good. Like very, very good. We are doing another day tour today. And I think that’s one of the cool things about Kyoto. There’s so many really interesting day tours. So this time we’re going on the Sagano train, which is this beautiful train ride that goes along a river. And then we’re going to do this Honugawa riverboat ride, which looks super cool. And throughout the day, we’re going to see the famous bamboo forest as well, which is something that you’ve probably seen before, even if you didn’t know you’ve seen it. This whole entire tour, by the way, was like 70 bucks. Such a good price for a whole day. I’m so impressed with like prices all around. We booked this one through K as well. Super easy. Our bus is right there. Let’s start this day. Come on. Let’s go. Let’s go. I’m starting to think that our tour guide is actually performer. So, this is like a two for one deal. You get the the tour and you get the performance. This train ride’s 25 minutes long and it goes along a very scenic route. They call it a romantic train ride. It’s famous to do this in fall, which we are technically a little bit before fall, but I think we’ll still see some beautiful sightes. Our tour guide is like apparently Ray Toven. Like he just like walked over to piano and started playing Pirates of the Caribbean. You’re so good. Again, my favorite movie. Super random to hear that in a train station in Kyoto, but love that. And time to get on the train. Bye. What is that animal? And what’s happening right now? I have so many questions. A big salamander. Why? Why? I I I I want to know why. Are we about to see a bunch of salamanders? I don’t know. This wasn’t me. I hope so. The thing I just love about Japan is just like people are It’s so funny. It’s like just there’s so many random moments like a Why why is there a guy with a salamander? What’s going to happen next? I don’t know. So you looked it up. Why is there a salamander? So um the whole month of September, the Japanese celebrate giant salamanders. And so September 9th is giant salamander day. Specifically on this train in this station, uh because giant salamanders live along the Hoya River, which is what we’re going to be taking the train down and then taking a boat. Amazing. I love how random and amazing that is. The water is so clean. Like it’s blue. It’s beautiful. This is like one of the most beautiful train rides I’ve ever done. Oh. Oh, that’s what we’re going to be doing. Hi. That’s going to be so cool. We are first, which means best views. And these are the life jackets. I’m very confused on how they actually work. They don’t feel like they have any flotation element at all inside of them, but I assume they must. A little concerned because our guide just said, “Okay, good luck, bro. Nobody’s steering. No one’s steering.” That was fun. That was fun. Hanashi, that was Hani. Look at this landscape. It’s amazing. Wow. Hey, let’s try. Let’s go. Let’s go. I’m sorry. Hello. Nice to meet you. Hello. Nice to meet you. Hey, let’s go. Go to America. Keeper, keeper, keeper. This is so cool. There’s a snack boat that just pulled up and they’re like straight up frying squid on it. They have grills and everything. That squid looks good. That smells good, too. What’ you get? I have no idea. We’re about to find out. Okay. I don’t like shrimp, but let’s try it. It does. No, it tastes way better than it smells. Very shellfish like. I love a snack boat. The river boat cruise dropped us off right here at the bamboo forest, which is a place I’ve wanted to go forever. Do you hear that? I don’t know if you can hear that on the mic. It’s the sound of all the bamboo blowing in the breeze. It’s like very peaceful sounding. I feel like we’re in a spa, a spa retreat. I just want to say if you don’t bring bug spray, you’re making a big mistake cuz this is filled with mosquitoes everywhere. Just mosquitoes everywhere. Like it’s beautiful. So intense. That’s so intense. You can literally hire a guy to run you through the bamboo forest. We had some amazing conveyor belt sushi, which I did not record in the video, and now I feel like it’s time for a good cocktail. I feel like this looks promising. What do you think? Yes. Yes. I think it looks very authentic. It’s called Barnto. That is the only English. Yeah. So, it’s kind of like what we both have experienced is nothing’s bad here in Kyoto. Correct. Nothing. So, let’s see what happens. Let’s go in this one. It is a staircase just straight down to a dungeon. So, let’s This could be bad. I’m not going to lie. Okay. There’s no There’s really nothing in the space. There isn’t. Okay. What is Okay. Wait, what’s that? They gave us this private booth literally like it’s like a room off to the side of the bar possibly because we’re loud and annoying Americans. I apologize in advance. We’ve really been trying not to be loud. We’ve done so bad. It’s just like not in our nature. So, apologies. Anyway, we’ve been told that when we’re ready to order, we just ding this bell that also has a menu that consists of nothing but Japanese. Japanese insider tip. Uh, Google Translate, download it on your phone as an app because what you can do is you can just scan anything and it will translate it. And often the translations don’t fully make sense, but you get the idea. And that’s really all the or use Google Lens on an Android device. Yeah. Or use Google Lens on an Android device. We’re literally can’t understand the menu here. What are you getting? I’m getting the fake electric bread. Amazing. That says banana. Banana. Banana with cream and rum. That sounds great. Everything in this country has been so great that I’m actually concerned to go back to the United States because I just I’m not ready to be disappointed to be honest with you. Oh, it’s beautiful. If you actually hold it, Cheers. I hope there’s this is Louis cuz he’s filming behind the camera and he can’t hold. And don’t forget his freaking shot of whiskey. Yeah, I have So, first things up, we are doing this. It’s a kimono tea ceremony. So, we’re going to go into this traditional house, get dressed up in kimonos. I’m so excited for this. I am ready. What do you think? They did this so fast. I was not allowed to film the process. Makes sense cuz there’s literally it’s like a a shop. There’s a bunch of women just getting you dressed up. They fully did my hair. See that? Wow. Look at this. Look at this. He just finished the tea ceremony. It was amazing. 45 minutes along, learn how to make matcha, learn how to stir matcha, and we were just informed that when you’re part of this experience, you can actually wear the kimono the whole day until 6:00 p.m. So, guess you’re just not getting out of this kimono. Me and Rachel for sure. It is hot, so we’re going to see how long we can survive it. Next, we have our lunch. Let’s go. Hi, This is our lunch spot. I just feel like we look amazing. And look at this entrance way. This spot is called Koto and it’s a traditional Japanese dining experience. Yep. What does that mean exactly? Is it I don’t know. Come with us and we’ll see. Let’s go. Wow, that was an interesting dining experience to say the least. Very traditional food. Not going to lie, that was I would say it’s pushing my limits of traditional. But tonight, we’re going to probably go to a Wagu beef place. Very excited for that. And now it is way too hot to be wearing this. As fabulous as it looks, I just need it off of my body. I feel so much better. We are now at Nishiki Market. So, if you love shopping, if you love trying just all different types of food, this is the spot to do it because they literally have stores just forever. The food scene here, in my opinion, is actually better than the restaurant we just had because you can just grab things from different stalls. We had some omacas. We had just like different sushi. We had sake. You can get all of that here in the Shiki Market. Also very clean. A like shockingly clean. I wish New York was this clean. I need to get something for my mom. So, I’m thinking this store right here. We have some traditional Japanese plate wear. I feel like these cat dishes will be perfect. These are so cute. They come in all different like colors and patterns, too. The quality is like on point. Also, fun fact, if you spend over 5,000 yen on anything in Japan and you bring your passport, you don’t have to pay taxes on that item in the Gillon district. And I have to say, this is so beautiful. And you said this is where the geishas often are seen. Yes, we’re just outside that area. Unfortunately, I cannot show them on camera. It is super against the law. really is actually against the law, but just use your imagination. And that’s what they look like. We might be able to see one. And if we get their permission, we can take a picture, video. We will ask. I will ask. We’ll do our best. We just stumbled across this lovely man who is doing bow and arrow. And Rachel will be now trying. Okay. And together. Oh, not bad. So random. I’m going to this spot. This is Olive Spa. I’m really excited. Want to do this for so long. Oh my gosh, that was literally the most amazing spa experience I have had anywhere on this planet. And I have had a lot of spa experiences cuz I love a spa. Essentially, it starts with a 30inut massage in which you have to put on like a dress like a fit like it’s like a black shirt and black shorts and then the masseuse like massages and she did like a foot bath right here and then they do a really intensive scalp massage where they put like delicious oils in your hair and you shower after right here. If this was near where I lived, I’m telling you right now, I would be here every single day. Every day. By the way, that whole experience was around $88. Worth 1 million, I would say. Let’s go get some steak Wagu. You got to get it when you’re in Japan. We’re here at Wagu Sukiyaki. I apologize in advance for pronunciation. I’m not great at it. I’m really not. Now, the cool thing about this is it is like a prefix menu type situation. Comes with five courses and then it starts with a tofu dish. Here in Japan, it’s so it’s like so creamy and tasty. Oh my god. This carpacio has the most orange looking egg yolk I’ve ever seen. Going to mix that. Oh my gosh. I love a carpacio. Are you serious? I love it. I love Look at this. This looks amazing. Oh my god. Don’t stop. Oh my gosh. This is so much. We got fire. Oh, nice and warm. Sugar. Oh wow. I don’t like sweet too much. My wife said I’m already sweet enough. I’ve literally never said that. I’ve never said that before. Good. What are you thinking? Really? That’s actually That’s actually good. Worth it, guys. It’s very hot. It came off of a fire. Wow. Thank you. I’m already going to tell you right now, this is going to be messy. So, let’s just wish for the best. Wa. We have a few different vegetables. They’re all being cooked in the meat. It’s literally a meat pie. This We were very confused. This is wheat gluten or as Lee says, Godzilla. Yes. Rachel has tried a Godzilla. Thoughts? It’s a mistake. It’s a mistake. No, it tastes fine. The texture is wild. I feel like this is what it would feel like if I bit a sponge. Biting a sponge. Okay. It tastes like the taste is like soy sauce. Soy sauce and sponge form. That’s where we’re at. Okay. Yeah. And that is our trip to Japan. We are actually headed to the airport right now. We’re back here in Tokyo. We took the train from Kyoto yesterday. If you enjoyed this Japan series, let me know in the comments. I’d love to do more travel related content. But until then, I will see you back in New York.
