Cygames Research, the research division of Cygames, and Tokyo University of the Arts have announced the start of joint research on game production and game AI development tools. This joint research focuses on two elements: visual representation to represent the entire virtual space in games, and game AI to control Non-Player Characters (NPCs) that act autonomously within that space.

Cygames will provide expertise in game production and publishing by students at Tokyo University of the Arts, and Tokyo University of the Arts will provide expertise in visual expression and game AI to Cygames. They will also jointly develop a live programming environment utilizing LLM (Large Language Model), a type of generative AI, as a tool related to NPC control.

Through this initiative, they aim to deliver creative and artistic game productions to the world and create an environment that will make it easier for artists in the arts to engage in game development in the future.

Comment by Takashi Kiriyama, Dean of Graduate School of Film and New Media, Tokyo University of the Arts

It is very significant for us to start a joint research project with Cygames prior to the opening of the Department of Game and Interactive Art in the Graduate School of Film and New Media in April 2026. Today, AI has become an indispensable part of the arts. Especially in the field of digital art, as typified by games, the incorporation of AI has the potential to take the artwork itself to a new level of interactivity. Generative AI is also having a significant impact on the production process. Whereas in the past, a small team could not cover all aspects of the process, it is conceivable that one person or a small group of people could be a great asset as generative AI changes the production itself. In these times, what can be expressed using AI and other advanced information technologies becomes increasingly important. Through joint research with Cygames, we aim to develop new forms of expression by exploring areas that have not yet been explored in the various fields of games.

Comment from Shuichi Kurabayashi, Director of Cygames Research

We have begun joint research on game production and game AI development tools with the Graduate School of Film and New Media, Tokyo University of the Arts. Cygames Research will explore new possibilities for the game medium through both the “practice” of production and publication by students and graduates, and the “research” of game AI/generative AI that supports the creative activities of artists. Cygames Research has been developing technologies to support creativity through research in computer science related to game expression and interaction. This joint research aims to establish a new research system to create technologies to support content creation in the age of generative AI through dialogue between art and technology. Through this initiative, we will promote the research and development of a suite of AI tools that will allow creators to think freely and enrich the player experience. As a “company that creates the best content,” we will continue to take on the challenge of delivering new experiences to the world together with the people of Tokyo University of the Arts.
