The 38th Tokyo International Film Festival wrapped on Nov. 5 with director Annemarie Jacir’s “Palestine 36” taking home the Tokyo Grand Prix, the event’s highest honor.
Set in 1936 during British colonial rule, the film sheds light on a pivotal moment in Middle Eastern history by depicting the uprising in Palestine through a powerful cinematic lens.
Among the festival’s other major honors, the Special Jury Prize went to “We Are the Fruits of the Forest” directed by Rithy Panh.
The best director honor was shared between Zhang Lu for “Mothertongue” and the duo Alessio Rigo de Righi and Matteo Zoppis for their film “Heads or Tails?”
“Mothertongue” also won Wang Chuanjun the best actor award.
In the best actress category, Momoko Fukuchi and Naomi Kawase were recognized for their performances in “Echoes of Motherhood.”
The award for best artistic contribution went to “Mother,” directed by Teona Strugar Mitevska, while the audience award was presented to director Yuichiro Sakashita’s “Blonde.”
