Bought this natto at hmart. Wasn’t cold when it arrived so I put it in my pantry. That was on Sunday, today is Wednesday. I know it’s a long shot and I sound like an idiot but is it safe or do I need to toss it? Like is it recommendation or safety requirement because sometimes the translation is off

natto is, to my knowledge, always either refrigerated or frozen. I can’t imagine natto being stored in the pantry to be good to eat, nor can i comprehend why you’d put it there in the first place.
My wife eats natto daily, it’s ALWAYS refrigerated. Natto is fermented with bacteria, so it being stored at room temp allowed it to continue to grow. While it’s most likely safe to eat (the bacteria isn’t harmful) it will be extra stringy and slimy.
Edit: Sorry, just realized you bought it frozen, so you’re likely not in Japan. It’s sold refrigerated over here. I can’t imagine the consistency of it would be any good after thawing and sitting for a few days. I’d toss it.
I have never bought Natto when it wasn’t frozen, even our favorite sushi chef keeps it frozen. I would toss it. Go to a Japanese market and get the good, safe stuff.
要冷蔵
Toss it
I eat natto every day for breakfast. I make my own once a week. It is always refrigerated. However, sometimes I put some in baby food jars and freeze it for later. But you can’t just let it sit around.
It was developed to preserve at room temperature
I’ve eaten months old natto. In Japan I don’t remember ever refrigerating it. Up to you.
Just to be on the safe side, I would toss it.
I imagine if you leave it unrefrigerated it just becomes MORE natto
Nato is fermented. So if you’re familiar with it try some, it’s probably ok. If you’re familiar haven’t eaten it before just throw it away.
Nattou is spoiled already, just in a good way
That’s my favorite brand of natto.
