Kyoto Tourist Tax Skyrockets in 2026 | Japan Travel News #kyoto

A major 2026 Japan update. If you are going to Japan, specifically Kyoto, starting March 1st, 2026, the tourist tax will increase and that can make staying here much more expensive. The updated rates do affect rooms based on their price with a tax on rooms costing 6,000 to 19,999 yen or roughly 40 to131 doubling from 200 yen to 400 yen. Rooms from 20,000 yen to 49,999 yen. Also doubling to 1,000 yen from 500 yen. 50,000 yen to 99,999 yen. rooms, which are around 328 to $656, getting hit with a four times tourist tax increase to $4,000 yen from 1,000 yen or around $26. and rooms over 100,000 yen or over $656 being hit with a 10 times tourist tax increase from 1,000 yen to 10,000 yen, which is around $66 at the time of making this video. Kyoto expects to double its yearly revenue from the tourist tax from 5.9 billion to 12.6 6 billion as luxury hotels continue to expand in the city. Will this affect your decision to go to Kyoto?
