A brand new jewellery shop is coming soon to York – with a bespoke twist!
Sora is set to open on Low Petergate at the end of the month, in what was previously the gift shop Il Gusto, and will offer a unique ring-making service.
The brand is founded by Sindija Avotina and Jamie Roche, who were inspired by a trip to Japan when they visited a shop that made a ring of your choosing before your eyes.
The concept is, you choose your metal and design and then everything is made in front of you in the shop – with the whole process taking 10 to 15 minutes.
“We couldn’t stop thinking how amazing the idea is,” Sindija told YorkMix. After doing a lot of research, the pair decided they wanted to create their own version.

Sindija and Jamie are from London originally, but Jamie went to university in York, and they knew this was the perfect city to start their business in.
“York is such a small but busy place,” said Sindija, “and it’s also very rich in history and amazing for independent businesses – it’s a community with everyone supporting each other.”
Sora will offer first silver and brass rings, “so everything is going to be very affordable”, with prices starting from £29.
The shop is also hoping to offer workshops in the future too, where people can make their own rings that are completely unique to them.
“Japan is known for appreciating handcrafted things and finding the beauty in imperfection – if there is some imperfections that’s what makes it so unique and beautiful.”
They also plan to offer gift cards.
And it’s not long until the doors to Sora will open.
“We definitely want to open before Christmas,” said Sindija. “We’re putting the finishing touches together, and waiting for the furniture for the store.”
Sora is planning to open at the end of November or early December with a special launch event. “We’re still thinking what we could do!”
