On a rainy afternoon in Tokyo, clusters of near-silent women gather around glass cases glowing with jewels. The 2000-square-metre hall at the National Art Centre in Roppongi has the hushed reverence of a library, scored only by soft footfalls and the faint rustle of silk coats. Tokyo’s lunching ladies, in their tasteful sea of navy, are here for Kaleidos: Colours, Cultures and Crafts.

This is Bulgari’s largest ever exhibition in Japan, and its first in a decade, aimed at exploring the common Italian-Japanese devotion to craftsmanship and precision. Curated by Gislain Aucremanne, Bulgari’s heritage director, it unfolds as a study of colour through hundreds of chromatic works, from jewellery to contemporary art.
