THE Government of Japan has conferred the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star, on Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg in recognition of his significant contributions to fostering closer relations between Japan and Malaysia.
The Japanese Embassy in Malaysia announced that Abang Johari is among the recipients of the 2025 Autumn Imperial Decorations, an honour bestowed by the Japanese Government.
“The award recognises his outstanding efforts in promoting regional exchange and mutual understanding between Japan and Malaysia,” the embassy said in a statement.
According to the embassy, Abang Johari has played a pivotal role in advancing economic and energy cooperation between Japan and Sarawak, particularly in renewable energy sectors such as hydrogen and ammonia.
“Under his leadership, Sarawak has strengthened its collaboration with leading Japanese companies, contributing to Japan’s energy transition and long-term energy security through the stable supply of liquefied natural gas (LNG),” the statement added.
The embassy further highlighted Abang Johari’s active role in promoting environmental cooperation involving Japanese universities and organisations, focusing on forest conservation and biodiversity preservation projects.
In addition to economic and environmental collaboration, the Sarawak Premier has also been a strong advocate for academic and youth exchanges that deepen mutual understanding between Japan and Sarawak.
“His dedication and leadership have made a lasting impact on the friendship and cooperation between Japan and Malaysia,” the embassy said. – November 3, 2025
