JAPAN’S HIDDEN GEM π―π΅ IRIOMOTE (OKINAWA)

Heat. [Music] [Music] Heat. [Music] Good morning everyone here from Ishiaki Island in Okinawa. So this is going to be our final video in Okinawa and we’re going to be heading to another island. We’re doing a day trip to an island called Io M. I think it takes about 50 minutes on the ferry to get there. and we’re doing a tour. So, yeah, we arranged it all at the ferry terminal the other day. It’s 22,800 per person, so full day. That includes food and we’re going to be visiting a waterfall, I think a sandbar as well to do some snorkeling. So, it looked really awesome. Luckily, the location that we’re staying at on Ishiaki is right next to the ferry terminal. And the ferry is around 8:00 a.m. That’s the ferry terminal right there. [Music] [Music] So, we have arrived on the island. Looks really awesome. Was really mountainous. More on that side over there. I don’t think there’s any villages or anything. I think this is the company. We got to look for Osan Pocky. Supposed to be a guy with a sign out here. And then I guess one of these vans will take us to the waterfall. Just going to get some drinks first cuz we don’t have any water for the trail. What are you getting? The 150 one. Yeah. I think Carol’s also going to get a a coffee latte. Maybe 200. Okay. All right. So, we got a small group. It’s just me, Carol, and this one other girl. The tour guide speaks English, so that’s good. A lot of people don’t speak English in Japan, so we usually can’t talk to them. [Music] So, we’re going to the waterfall in style by kayak. I think there’s no road there or anything. So, you have to kayak for 40 minutes and then there’s going to be a trek for 20 minutes, a little hike. Super noisy insects. Sounds cool. Some of the loudest insects I’ve heard, I think. Yeah, it is really nice this island. Really like thick jungle. Wild. So, the guide told us that only 2,000 people live on this island. Ishigaki where we came from is around 50,000 people. So yeah, there isn’t that many people living here really. Yeah, this is way easier than kayaking in the sea. Barely have to pedal to go quick. Feels like we’re actually just drifting, doesn’t it, Cal? Yeah, just a little bit of pedaling takes me very far. [Music] [Music] Wow, we’re getting the first view on the river over the waterfall. Look at the height of that thing back there. I didn’t realize how tall it was. You can see the the top of it back there. Could actually see it from the ferry in the distance, but really far away. It’s going to be amazing to be right under it. We can swim there, too. So, even better. I think this is the most scenic kayak in the river that we’ve done. And this is the point where we start the 20minut trek. That’s why you see the other empty kayaks here from the other tours. [Music] [Music] So this is the gigantic waterfall. He just told us it’s the biggest waterfall in Okinawa, 55 m. So beautiful. How’s the water temperature? Very cold. Nice cold. [Music] [Music] Got a quieter little pool on this side. A mini beach, too. So, the cool thing is we have like an hour and 15 minutes here. A long time. And then I think we’re still going to be here for the food. He’s gonna cook some noodles for us. So yeah, perfect setting to have some noodles. So probably one of the nicest waterfalls we’ve ever been to. Yeah, it’s really beautiful. It reminds me of the waterfalls in the Blue Mountains in Australia. Yeah, they’re a bit like this cuz of the orange kind of rock too there. Doesn’t look very orange on the camera. Just with our eyes, though. [Music] [Music] The silver is looking absolutely delicious. Lots of veggies in there, isn’t there? Yeah, we have the green onions. This is I think it’s ginger. And I don’t know what this is, but this is pork, I think. Yeah, in Japan they always make the ginger pink somehow. [Music] [Music] So, since our group is going a bit quick, he said we’ve still got quite a lot of time. So, we’ve kayaked to this other part, which is right next to the open sea there. So, all this is salt water. I think even the river that we were in before was a mix of salt water and the river water. So, he said that nobody really lives anywhere around here. There’s no villages or anything. He did say there’s some old guy though living in a cave around that corner. Doesn’t have a house. He just lives in a cave for some reason. But I think he said that’s like 5 km that way. It’s a protected area. Uh UNESCO. So, that’s also why I haven’t gotten the drone out. Not allowed to fly the drone around here. Oh, it’s really shallow here, isn’t it, Carol? Yeah. Look at the sand. I could touch it. He said at low tide all this is just sand. [Music] [Music] So, now we’re going to do the snorkeling part of the trip. They gave us some fins. You don’t have to use the life jacket. We brought the trainers cuz we thought we needed them for the the hike. No, but they they give you uh water shoes. It was really good to use it. Yeah. And then now they gave us flip flops too. So yeah, don’t come in train as if you’re doing this tour. Just come in your flip flops. And here’s the boat. So I think we’re with a bigger group now. There’s more people here. [Music] Green jingle. [Music] So, it was some really nice snorkeling. ended up being three stops. So, the first one was for the turtles and then at the second one the reef was a lot nicer, very colorful. And then the third stop is what sometimes is a sandbar. Right now, the tide was too high. So, yeah, there was no sandbar there, but we we still stopped there. You probably saw I filmed like this snake thing that I’ve never seen before. And the guy told us that that’s one of the most dangerous like sea creatures or animals around here. Yeah, he actually mentioned that in the morning and we were not expecting to see it. I didn’t see it. Only you. Yeah, I saw it. But when you showed me the the footage, I was like, “Oh, this is dangerous.” Cuz he said it that poison is very strong and can be deadly. Yeah, if it bites you. But he also said that they rarely bite you, so it’s okay. But maybe I shouldn’t have gotten so close to it. I was really, really close. Probably also some of the biggest parrot fish we’ve ever seen. Yeah, some are like this size or very big. Super colorful. I also saw the like a group of squid. It was really nice. And the ferry back to Ishiaki is only in about 40 minutes time. So, we’re just going for a little walk around here. The ghost town, ghost village. I saw on Google Maps that there’s a beach, so we’re going to head there. It’s only 6 minutes there. Yeah, look how quiet this place is. I think on the other side of the island there’s like a bigger settlement there. So maybe that’s where the majority of the people live. That’s a cute little store. Don’t seem to be open right now. This one too. Have a nice day in Mote Jima. So when you see Jima at the end that means island. For example the previous video we were at Mako Jima. So Mako Island. So this is called Maruma Beach. Looks quite nice. It’s cloudy right now so can’t really see the colors popping. There’s another little island over there. So I think the ferry that we got in the morning continued on to that one. [Music] Snap. [Music] [Music] [Music] So, we’re back on Ishiaki Island now. We’re trying to find a sushi place tonight. Carol also saw that there’s a place that plays traditional music. Okinawa music. I think the show starts at 7:45, so we might go there. We ate here the other day. Indian food. It’s pretty nice. There’s two Indian restaurants on this island. So, we don’t know if you have to make a reservation for the music place, but yeah, we’re just going to head there and find out. Hopefully not. So, luckily, we got a good spot for the live show. It’s going to be right over there at the back. I think it’s going to start soon. And also lucky that they have one of these menus that you can translate to English. No, it’s not just English, even other languages. Vietnamese, Chinese, I guess. Korean, too. Yeah. So, I got two pieces of tuna sushi. 1,360. Oh, but that’s the two, isn’t it? Two orders. So, it’s four pieces. One for me and another one for you. And karagi, deep fried chicken, 780. They also have like meat sushi here. I guess that’s what you call it, right? Yeah. Raw meat. They have the Ishigaki beef nigiri 850. I think I’ll have this one. Okinawa rice. Okinawa seasoned rice. 480. And also some French fries. 500. Show’s about to start. [Music] Oh, I [Music] might [Music] see my body. Heat. Heat. [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] So, we’ve come to this cool place that we came yesterday, which is basically a big building with a bunch of different isakayas. Okay. Or Yeah. So, I’m sticking with the Orion. And Cheers. Yeah. And Carol got the omeu, the plum wine. I usually get that too, but I don’t want to mix. Yeah. On the rocks. Yeah. Here they pour a lot. Yeah. Cuz some places you order the plum wine and Yeah. It’s like half full. That’s a good amount. Carol can probably show you the the inside the coroner. It’s a really cool place. There’s just a bunch of different isizakayas all the way until the end. And there’s a second floor. We haven’t even been there yet. Morizakayas. We’ve ordered some more food, too. Edamamei and what was the other thing? Uh, giant classic appetizers. [Music]

The ghost village is very laid back, but they do open the cafΓ©s – the one you passed was very nice – they gave us delicious (and complimentary) locally grown banana!
It's such a quiet island and it casts its spell over you; we spent a few days just up the road from the village and hoping to return one day!
Glad you enjoyed Iriomote.
Another paradise. Thank you for sharing
Only at @jumpingplaces channel do you see a sea snake become a sea turtle ππππ
