On November 1st, commencing at 0:30 p.m. local time for approximately 20 minutes, Ms.TAKAICHI Sanae, Prime Minister of Japan, held a summit meeting with the Right Honourable Mark Carney, Prime Minister of Canada, during her visit to Gyeongju, Republic of Korea to attend the APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting. The overview of the meeting is as follows:

1.  At the outset, Prime Minister Carney conveyed his congratulations on Prime Minister TAKAICHI’s assumption of office. Prime Minister Takaichi thanked Prime Minister Carney for his congratulatory message, and expressed her sincere respect for Prime Minister Carney’s leadership as the G7 President.

2.  The two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthening cooperation for realizing a Free and Open Indo-Pacific, on the basis of the “Japan-Canada Action Plan for contributing to a free and open Indo-Pacific region.”

3.  Prime Minister TAKAICHI also noted that Canada is an extremely important partner, and the two leaders reaffirmed their intention to advance cooperation across a wide range of areas of security and economic fields, including energy security and food security.

4.  The two leaders concurred to work in close coordination with Canada on regional situations, such as on policies toward North Korea including its nuclear and missile issues as well as the abductions issue.
