What to Eat in Osaka Part 2 🇯🇵 | Takoyaki, Okonomiyaki, Matcha Buns & the BEST Bites!
Osaka has to be my favorite city for food and adventure, I think, in all of Japan. I just love walking outside and smelling the fresh takoyaki. It is just a beautiful city. And this is part two of everything I ate. We’re at takoyaki, a beloved street food item in Osaka. There’s a lot of places that sell it, but we decided to just go to this one. There’s like more down there, too. Maybe we’ll try other ones, too. I’m really excited. I love taky. Look, they’re making it. It’s like a batter and then there’s octopus. Hi. Can I get number two? Brown sauce with mayo. Yeah. Yep. Thank you. Did you get them getting the octopus? They’re so such big pieces. Whoa, we got it. There’s seating up there so we can stand and eat it. Whoa. Doesn’t it look so good? It smells really good. There’s a nice table you can sit at to eat it right by the water. How nice. Whoa, look at it. It smells really good. I got their It has like this brown sauce, mayo. These are bonito flakes, which is a type of dried fish. That’s what dashi stock is made out of. So, they dry the fish out and then they shave it to these little strips. And then there’s onions and then ginger on the side. We have our first takoyaki of the trip. I already described what’s on it, so we’re going to do a B-roll shot. Oo, it’s so so Whoa, look at that. Can you get a Can you get a photo, please? It’s going to probably be really hot, so I’m going to try not to burn my mouth. But essentially, these are um little pancake balls and there’s octopus in them and then they’re topped with these yummy sauces and it’s such it’s so good. It’s like my favorite thing. Let’s try it. M. You can’t see anything. Can you like put it down and open up? Do you guys see that piece of octopus? That’s a huge piece. And I already bit half of it. Essentially, they’re just like these really soft, delicious balls of octopus pancake. M. I like the freshness from the green onions. It adds a little bite to it. Is there stuff on my face? And then adding in like the brown sauce is kind of like a sweet almost teriyak but not too sweet. More of a soy sauce base. And then adding in mayo makes it creamy. And then the actual pancakes itself aren’t like solid. They’re more like of a chewy type of thing. So it’s like this soft yet crunchy and sweet and salty creamy ball of octopus. [Music] Is it like the best one you’ve ever had? Is it not that good? [Music] I don’t know if it’s the best one I’ve ever had. It is a little different than other ones I’ve had because some of the other ones I’ve had, the outside is much more crispy while this one is literally just like sagging. It’s like just a soft ball. So, it’s it’s like different, but it’s it’s still really good. And I like how the octopus in it is so big. Did you guys see them putting it in? Like the pieces are substantially large, which makes it much more better cuz I feel like back at home when I get this, there’s like barely any octopus. Like, I want a big bite of the octopus. And yeah, it’s really good. Yo, I dogged this. This was so good. I’m looking at this and I’m still dreaming about how delicious this was. a must try. As you all know by now that I have a giant sweet tooth. So when we were walking while we were shopping in Donburi, we saw this like little pastry shop and they said they had the best egg tarts ever. And I guess I really didn’t talk that much in these clips, so it’s kind of boring. But we ended up getting two pastries, an egg tart and this like matcha cream puff, which I heard is like really good in Japan. So we’re going to see if it lived up to the hype. We were walking and we’re doing some serious shopping. Meaning that we were just looking and we didn’t find anything we like yet. But we got some sweet treats. We got this egg tart and we got this matcha cream puff which was almost sold out. We got the last one. So, we think this is going to be really yummy and good. I’m going to try the egg tart first. I’ve noticed that um the egg tart is much more yellow than the ones at home. Let’s try it. [Music] Super eggy and sweet. Very smooth, almost buttery. M. That one’s really good. Not too sweet, but really yummy. And then we have this matcha cream puff. It seems like there’s a hard exterior almost cookie like shell and then like a cream puff regular. And it is filled with matcha, I think. Let’s try this one. You guys see that? It squirted in my mouth. Oh my god, it went out the hole. M. It’s really buttery and flaky. The top is crispy and it has like a nice bitterness from the matcha. The cream tastes like a buttercream and it’s like it has a good matcha flavor. This is really good, too. I really like this one, but I think I like the egg tart more. This is where we got them. The sweet treat journey just continues on. Just look at how beautiful all like that river is. We found this melon pond place and that is where we’re going right there where that big melon pan is. melon bread. if you haven’t had that before. It’s kind of like a sweet dinner roll almost and then on top there’s like a cookie crust almost. Um, but it’s like a sweet bread and then inside you have some cold ice cream. And I decided to get green tea today. And this was 600 yen. So, how much is that in US? Maybe like three or four dollars. But the bread is really warm. They just pulled it out of the oven and the ice cream’s really cool. They just scooped it and we’re going to try it. So there you go. First bite m. [Music] It’s so crispy on the outside. It’s like eating like a shortbread cookie, but then also there’s like the warm bread aspect to it. And then the ice cream is really good. It’s like a little bitter cuz it’s green tea, but still sweet. And this is the best. You get the warm and the cold and it’s so delicious and yummy. Best sweet treat ever. Okay, so we’re going to try okonomiyaki, which is a kind of like a savory pancake, cousin of taco yaki. Yaki, I feel like means grill cuz every time there’s yaki, there’s a grill involved. Um, in front of us there’s a hot grill in which the okonomiyaki will be placed. I don’t believe it’ll be cooked, but I believe it’ll be placed here and it’ll stay warm. It’s really hot right now like me. And it will stay warm throughout the entire time of eating, which is awesome cuz you know, you hate it when your food gets cold. We were on the third floor of this takoyaki place that was had like a street cart outside. Um, and it like right next to it had a sign that was like second floor, third floor okonomiyaki and stuff. You can get like takiyaki here too, like aisoba and stuff, but we just wanted to try okonomiyaki. So that’s what we’re going to get today. We got the pork and egg one, which is 1,100 yen. Here she is. Can you guys hear it sizzling? Here we have the okonomiyaki. So, this is a like Japanese style pancake. Um, allegedly the first use of the word came in the 1930s in Osaka, which is where we are right now. Um, essentially it’s a pancake from wheat flour and it’s filled with ton like whatever you want really. Okonomi means like whatever you like and then yaki means grill. So whatever you like on the grill. Um, this one has I think some vegetables. There’s bonito flakes densen on top. Look at those. They’re not alive if any of you are crushing it. There’s mayo. There’s some seaweed flakes. And then the sauce is like a worooisher based um brown sauce and it’s filled with pork and egg and it’s served on this tan or grill. Flat top grill is what they call it. They give you these cute little spatulas and we’re going to stab it and get right into it. Ready? Last. Okay, let’s try it, guys. Doesn’t that look so good? It looks like there’s cabbage in it, green onions, pork, and egg. I got a little piece. It’s really hot. It smells really good. Let’s get a piece. Oh, do you guys see that steam? So, I’m going to try a piece with a little bit of everything if I didn’t mush it up. Can you guys see? There’s like cut up cabbage and stuff in it. Let’s try it. It’s the cousin of takoyaki. Add cabbage. That’s what it tastes like. The pancake itself is like very fluffy and savory. A little crunchy from the cabbage in it. The wish adds a little like sweet barbecue flavor and the mayo adds a little touch of creaminess. This is very delicious. I’ve never had a savory pancake other than like kimchi jan or like a seafood pajang like the Korean sty pancakes. Um but this is much thicker and much heartier. So if you were to eat this, you’re going to be full and satisfied at the end. But yeah, we’re going to eat the rest of this. I really liked it. That’s part two of everything I ate in Osaka. I think there’s more that I have to post still. Um, but I will be doing that very, very soon. Thank you for following along with my Japan adventures. Please like, comment, and subscribe if you want to see more from me. But that was it. Bye, guys. Love you. M.
