Hokkaido Food Tour: Kushiro’s BEST Ramen, Zangi, & Conveyor Belt Sushi | Japan Travel Guide
welcome back to Kushiro we will continue with part 2 of our food tour time for dinner the izakaya is run by quite an elderly couple i’ll order a few light dishes otoshi mozuku seaweed has a pleasant crispy and slimy texture i can’t turn down mapo tofu Japanese style, with a thick and fragrant sauce mild in spice and flavour but very delicious fried oysters (kaki) served with a mayonnaise based sauce freshly fried, hot and crispy the oyster is rich and creamy, a perfect contrast to the crispy coating a perfect dish for a rainy night and finally, the house specialty uni and miso grilled eggplant wow… sweet and salty with a very rich umami flavour the distinct flavours of uni and miso blend perfectly i think a little bit of sugar is added to create the perfect brulee top effect this is an unbelievably delicious and unique dish fantastic home cooking at a cozy izakaya definitely worth a visit if you are in Kushiro see you tomorrow today we’ll check out a new conveyor belt sushi chain but first a new grocery store to explore a whale of a sale very reasonably priced sushi ?? a 782 calorie egg sandwich…!? a solid discount grocery store we have arrived Matsuriya, a highly rated sushi chain first customer ?? 41 pages!? insane selection i will start with the recommended dishes (osusume) 8 premium nigiri for 630 JPY is ridiculously cheap but i will try more exciting sushi today the recommended dishes i ordered them all without translating, so it’s more fun this looks interesting… lol it’s chicken breast with a spicy miso sauce and lemon zest not bad and what could this be… possibly sardine, braised in a sweet soy sauce, pretty good engawa gunkan slightly chewy, very rich, very delicious sujiko and shiso briny, pleasantly fishy and the distinct flavour of shiso the rice is excellent, perfectly chewy and well seasoned the next round ikura nameko mushroom maguro and salmon beautiful long slices of tuna tender and surprisingly rich salmon is the #1 seller at matsuriya a very generous piece of fish very tender and very rich the salmon is outstanding this looks interesting slimy texture, mild earthiness, the main taste is shiso, not bad huge premium ikura unsurprisingly, the #1 and #2 items are the best can’t believe the ikura is 390 JPY for 2… i ordered 2 kinds of torched engawa sushi engawa has a very unique snappy texture and richness this one has spicy miso sauce and negi the torch sears the fat creating an extra delicious flavour it pairs perfectly with hot tea our last sushi, miso eggplant hmmm… the eggplant has been deep fried so it is quite greasy the flavour is good but i don’t enjoy the oiliness this was the only below average sushi i tried 22 sushis, a nice light breakfast higher quality and lower prices than the average conveyor belt sushi chain a great conveyor belt sushi chain see you for dinner the originator of zangi (marinated fried chicken) a cozy bar-only shop the online reviews warn of terrible service and constant fighting between the husband and wife, so i was very excited to check out this restaurant the original zangi extremely crispy coating the soy sauce based marinade creates a darker colour very crispy with excellent flavour the soy based marinade has a mild sweetness the coating has so much flavour the sauce is similar to worchestershire but tangier it really prevents the chicken from feeling heavy a perfect combination the husband and wife are much more calm than i was expecting the couple beside me said they are usually more animated not much of a show but the chicken is fantastic i prefer this more flavourful zangi over karaage this is like a more crispy, more flavourful KFC the crispy ends are the best part by far my new favourite fried chicken didn’t get the show i was expecting but the service was fine
and the chicken was unforgettable let’s try another Kushiro original food Kawamura, the originator of Kushiro ramen shoyu is the classic version the restaurant’s entire history, beginning in 1989 the broth is chicken based a surprisingly light and clean taste Kushiro ramen uses extra thin curly noodles menma (fermented bamboo) although the broth is chicken based, there are pork slices lean and medium chewy chicken lard is added for a deep savoury flavour the soy sauce flavour is very light the thin noodles hold the light broth extremely well pepper and soy sauce are a fantastic combination extra fragrant my noodle eating techniques are still sub-par fail i much prefer the lightness of chicken broth over pork although it is a remote city in Hokkaido, Kushiro has so many
original foods that are all delicious i truly enjoyed Kushiro shoyu ramen at Kawamura a must-try for ramen lovers hotel breakfast time good selection for a business hotel another Kushiro specialty, the French dog like a corn dog with a fish sausage and you dress it with ketchup, mustard and sugar miso soup hot dishes salad curry and natto braised sardine sweet and savoury, pretty good braised mushrooms and tofu also pretty good meatloaf? pretty good everything was prepared and seasoned well and the selection was great even the breakfast spaghetti was good Kushiro has so many unique food specialties but there isn’t a lot in terms of attractions i didn’t have enough time for food but also had too much time for everything else i greatly enjoyed my 4 days here but it’s time to head back to Sapporo i got a couple more local foods at the station Kushiro soba is green, coloured with chlorella, a type of algae soba is obviously not a good to-go food but i had no choice no distinct algae flavour but the tangled soba is still delicious and my last Kushiro food curry chicken pungent curry flavour, very savoury very moist dark meat not crispy but the flavour is outstanding and that was the end of my time in Kushiro i hope you enjoyed this video please like and subscribe if you did my food journey will continue soon
Join me for the ultimate Kushiro, Hokkaido Food Tour! 🍣🍜 I’m exploring the best food in this unique port city, famous for its light ramen style.
We start dinner at a local Izakaya (izakaya Takkon) enjoying delicious fried oysters (Kaki Fry), savory Mapo Tofu, and a must-try local specialty: Grilled Sea Urchin and Miso Eggplant.
Next, it’s off to the legendary Torimatsu, the originator of Japanese Zangi! We try the original recipe for this incredibly juicy fried chicken. The food adventure continues at Matsuriya, a highly-rated conveyor belt sushi chain, where I try local Kushiro specialties—some hits, some misses!
The main event: a bowl of deeply satisfying Kushiro Ramen at Kawamura Kushiro Ramen. Their signature light Shoyu and Chicken Broth is the perfect nightcap.
Finally, a review of the Smile Hotel breakfast and a grab-and-go snack of local Green Soba and delicious Kushiro Curry Fried Chicken for the ride back to Sapporo!
