Head coach Eddie Jones believes his Japan squad can go one better than their historic 2015 tip-over of the South Africa at Brighton as they prepare to face the reigning world champions at Wembley Stadium.
“Ten years ago was pretty symbolic for Japan. Now they have the chance to play such quality Test matches. It’s up to this team to make sure that legacy is enhanced,” Jones said, casting the tour as a major opportunity.
Japan head into the clash off the back of a narrow 19-15 loss to the Australia national rugby union team and face South Africa on 1 November in London, followed by further Tests against Ireland, Wales and Georgia.
Jones praised the improvements in his squad’s mindset, skill-set and pressure application, and argued that South Africa can be made vulnerable if Japan apply themselves.
“We’re going there thinking we can win. South Africa are like anyone — if you put pressure on and get in their face they make mistakes.”
Despite their underdog tag, Jones emphasised that Japan are not looking to relive history but to set new benchmarks:
“We want this group to enjoy the spotlight and play with cohesion and physicality that’s never been seen.”
