Kyoto Animation (KyoAni) announced a new anime series during the company’s recent “KyoAni no Sekai-ten” event. An adaptation of Hiro Yūki’s novel, 20 Seiki Denki Mokuroku (20th Century Electricity Catalog), the anime series will air on Japanese television sometime in 2026.
Titled Sparks of Tomorrow in English, the story transports viewers to the summer of 1907, the 40th year of Japan’s Meiji era, setting the stage in the scenic Fushimi area of Kyoto. It follows two teenagers, Inako and Kihachi, who are attempting to stop Inako’s arranged marriage by locating a lost “Electrical Catalogue”. The unlikely pair scour Kyoto and Shiga prefectures in search of the unusual manuscript.
Characters
Inako Momokawa (voiced by Sora Amamiya): The 15-year-old second daughter of a prestigious sake brewery. Clumsy and lacking self-confidence, Inako often receives scoldings from her father. Her solace is found in prayer, and her secret ambition is to become the chief sake brewer, following in her deceased mother’s footsteps.
Kihachi Sakamoto (voiced by Yūma Uchida): A suspicious, machine-loving boy who boasts of the coming “age of electricity” and utterly rejects traditional gods. Kihachi once swore to usher in this electric age with his older brother, a dream they chronicled in the “Electrical Catalog” book. However, both the book and his brother vanished, causing Kihachi to abandon his grand aspirations.
