Local Girl Shows Me Japan’s Oldest Onsen Town 🇯🇵

Good afternoon from rural Japan where your man has just arrived here at Arma Onson, one of the oldest and most famous onen towns in this country. Guys, you all know about the onsons in Japan. The hot spring water and all that. It’s where the Japanese go to ah get rained on. Apparently, it’s raining. It’s uh Yeah, Japanese love a good onen. It’s like the hot spring water, the minerals and all that. So, this onen town is one of the oldest, the most famous because for over a thousand years, emperors and samuris and all that have been coming here to relax. And now the tourists, mostly Japanese tourists, come for their weekends and such like. Today’s a public holiday. I’m filming this on a Monday public holiday. So, it’s uh yeah, it’s all local Japanese coming to chill in this town. And I have a local Japanese friend who’s meeting me somewhere down here. Yes, finally, guys. Finally, I have a Japanese friend, Nina. Nina la Japanesea. Yeah. Ha. Yeah. Oh, ha. Yeah. She is a vlogger and she does vlogs in Spanish language. So, she’s hapa. Ha. But I actually Japanese English channel, too. Okay. Two channels now. Yeah. Okay. Wow, this is beautiful. Is this the hot spring water? Oh, no. This is cold. You’re going to see a real hot spring water over there. Ah, so this is just like a river. Yeah. Yeah, that’s a river. Oh, wow. It’s so cool how they’ve done it there. Yeah. But this is not where you dip your feet. No, no, but you can dip your feet over there. Okay. Yeah. So, they have like hot spring water running through this town and uh there’s two types, right? There’s the kinsen and ginsen. Yes. Yeah. So there’s like a gold one that has iron in it and then there’s like a silver one. They’re called kinen and ginsson. I’ve done my research. I’ve also done my research on the local snacks. There’s two local snacks that I’m eager to try. There’s the mangju, which is some steamed bun, right? Yeah. And the senbe, which is some kind of rice cracker, but they make it with the carbonated hotring water. So yeah, I’m eager to try those. And some kind of local cider as well, right? Yeah. You’re in your home. Yeah. So they call it cider, but it’s not alcoholic. Cider just means like carbonated spring water. So there’s some local drink as well. But this town is beautiful. This is uh this is like a getaway town for people from like Osaka and Kobe, right? Yeah. So I can give you a good tour cuz I come here every year. Okay. Okay. From since I was a baby. All right. Uhhuh. It’s not too far from where your family home is, right? No, it’s only one direct bus, 1 hour. Okay. People come here for little day trip or one night trip. Ah, right. To relax. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Okay. And everyone around, are they Japanese or are some people like you can tell they’re Korean or Chinese or what? Mostly Japanese. This is not very well known among foreigners. More towards Japanese people. Over there is bathtop. We’re going to go over there. And this is the mango they want to eat straight away. We get straight into the street food. Okay, let’s get the Let’s just get one and share it. Yeah. Yeah, that’s good, guys. Maybe I can eat twice as much food because I have someone to to eat half my food. So, I can try twice as much uh different things. Oh, well. So, these are the mangju here. They’re steamed steamed buns. Uh one place [Music] Okay, we have I even have a camera woman. Oh my god, that’s so hot. Yeah. Uh, how can we share this? You can just bite it. Uh, I want to do it hygienically. Hygienically? It’s okay. You can just bite it. Okay, I’ll get another one for you. Oh, wow. Yeah, it’s it’s steaming hot and it’s like red bean. I think it’s red bean, right? It’s the ankle jazuki. Yeah. Yeah, the ankle. So when you mix isuki red beans with sugar, you get ankle. This kind of paste. You like it? Huh? So hot. Not only here, every hot spring places usually sell this. Okay. Because they cook in a low temperature like the almost same temperature as your hot spring. All right. Yeah. Yeah. It’s not too sweet either. It’s like hot, sticky, and just a little bit sweet. I like that. Most Japanese sweets are like that where it’s like you’re not getting a sugar bomb, so you can eat a bunch of them. Yum. Yum. Yum. Yum. So much for sharing. Right. I just I just ate the full thing. That’s fine. Actually, before I’m going to get another one for eat. Really? Yeah. But you were waiting for me. Oh, yeah. Or another time. No, I was waiting for you and I thought maybe it’s going to be another 2 hours. So maybe I need 2 hours. Wow. Your expectations are so low because I understand that in Japan public transportation is very complicated. Didn’t you take like three trains or something? So uh I originally was going to come here by bus and then uh I couldn’t find where the bus was leaving from and then after 10 minutes I had already departed. So I had to take like three different trains to get here which seems complicated but it was only like 22 minutes. It was like honor train and then change and honor train and then change. But I found you very puncture because like 1220 you arrived. It’s not even that bad. We were going to meet at 12. We were going to meet at 12:00 and I got here 12:22. So by Japanese standards it’s pretty bad. But Nina’s used to traveling in Latin America and she says that’s in Latin America that’s not too bad. That’s kind of normal. I think you want to try that one. That is one of the most important important mangu Japanese traditional sweets that has a moi and also anko. Oh, so it’s like um they’re going to give you like Oh, they have maybe giving out samples before. Oh, this one. This is a very important Japanese sweet. Ah, so it’s like a mochi. It is like this sticky rice flour. Yeah, exactly. And it is so sticky sticky. That’s why this is so popular. And all those hotels around here, they usually serve this as a dessert after dinner. Oh, really? Oh, okay. Cuz it’s like nice. Okay. Oh, samples. Okay. Okay. Oh, it’s all spongy, huh? Okay, let’s go then. I like it. Yeah, I prefer the mangju. Oh, okay. I think this one is not sweet. And yeah, it has a weird taste. What is the taste? Some sticky iron. I don’t know. I think this is cinnamon. I don’t know. Yeah, there’s some kind of herb or something in there. I think you want to try that one over there because then this place and this place basically has the same thing but uh that is not popular and this is new. This is Sunday. We’re breaking the law, right? Because there’s nowhere to go here. There’s no sign. Okay, it’s okay here. Yeah, but not in Osaka and the big cities and stuff. You have to you have to wait at the Oh, never mind. taking break right now. Ah, okay. At the two you can have a fresh sundae. All right. So, they’re constantly making them All right. In five in 5 seconds you have to eat or it’s going to ah so as soon as they finish cooking it you have to eat within 5 seconds. This is the only place you can eat fresh and soft. Okay. Kind of like sweet. Yeah. But yeah, they had sugar and miso. It was kind of like a weird contrast of taste. So I didn’t really And was it my favorite paste there? Cheese is cheese. No, chestnut. Yeah, the mochi itself doesn’t there’s I think there’s no sugar in it. It’s like um just plain and all the sweetnesses come from the topping chestnut. This might be my favorite dango that I’ve ever eat. Really? It’s so good. I like it a bit crispy outside. Oh, yum. So, we’ve tried already three. We just The station is like right there and we’ve already tried like three different roads. Okay, maybe we should walk a bit first. Yeah. And explore the town. It’s probably going to rain heavy at any moment. You can see the rain clouds are all around us. And just as I said that we are getting soaked. Yeah, I seen it coming. Oh my god. So this is probably why despite it being a public holiday, it’s not that busy is uh Yeah. It’s actually busy for this place. It’s usually like the half the people here. So even on a rainy day, all these people are coming. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Okay. So this is the bar and that is the Kino. That is um Kingston that you looked for. Okay. So if you just want to dip your feet, it’s for free. It’s free. It’s like a free sample. You put your feet in. Then you like it. Maybe then you want to do the full thing. Okay. Uh, okay. We can sit here. Okay. So, yeah, this water, it looks kind of muddy and all that, but that’s the iron, right? This is iron. And you can smell it, too. Have a beautiful skin after. Yeah, I don’t smell it. You can smell when you eat your Oh, yeah. And normally this kind of hot spring water has like a strong like a sulfur taste like rotten eggs, but I don’t in this town I don’t smell it at all. So that’s good cuz uh yeah, otherwise you you dip your feet and your feet smell like rotten eggs for the rest of the day. Uh so usually I like to wash off after like when I’m right inside I put I will wash after itchy if I don’t. Ah okay. And how hard is it? M I don’t know. I don’t know. Yeah, we’ll find out soon. You can do everything in the hotel. Yeah. So people do that. They they come they just stay the hotel they enjoy the onen in the hotel. So there are two types. So you can do this one like that or you can stay in hotel for forever. Ah okay. How many hotels are here? There are so many. So we are doing like day tour but if you go over there a lot of hotels all right they usually offer orange like the past. Okay. My favorite thing to do is like when I come here I can dip my feet in here and over there um behind the sweet shop there’s um free place to sit down and get AC. All right. Yeah. Yeah. So, we’ve done this. It’s like 15 minutes or 20 minutes or what? Yeah. Okay. Yeah. The rain has stopped, so we’re going to take the chance to explore more while the rain is off, right? Well, that was nice, right? Yeah, it was so nice. People usually bring like towel you don’t have. Yeah, I knew this. I should have been prepared. Okay, so where are we going? Okay. So, we’re going to go to my secret spot. Secret. Secret spot. Yeah. It looks like secret cuz nobody else is coming this way. Yeah. But we are going. Yeah. This way. In the rain again. In the rain, but it’s almost nothing. In Japan, they are saying when it’s raining but still sunny. We say that the fox are making a wedding. The fox fox are doing the wedding because they want to do a wedding in a sunny weather, but they don’t want people to come. They want to do a secret wedding. So right now fox is doing wedding. Go singing is a kinen spring containing red water enriched with salt and iron. This hot spring is famous for its high salt concentration and the water temperature 63.9° C. So, this collects all the hot spring water from the ground and then it’s distributing it to like where we were down there where we were soaking our feet in that. So, yeah, this is the source of it. It’ll be all coming from under there. That’s cool. That’s for the gold one, the the kinsen. Yeah. Yeah. And there’s another one for the ginsen somewhere. No, the only kinsen. The mostly people come here for kinsen. All right. Ginsen is just kind of like Pikachu is most famous, right? There’s another Pokemon for Pikachu. All right. Okay. Oh, before going to a normal tourist spot, we want to go to a secret another secret spot. Okay. Sure. The secret tour of Aria onen. Yeah. My family usually stay like up on the mountain and it’s only 12 minutes walking distance from here, right? And on the way there is something very interesting. Okay. Oh, what is this? It’s a temple or something. This is a Buddhist temple called onen onsen means hotring. G means temple. So it’s a hot spring temple. Okay. For Buddhists. Yeah. Mhm. But most most Japanese people live Shinto, right? Actually, Japan is one of the countries we are defined as non-religion. There’s only six countries in the world that doesn’t have religion, which means more than 50% of the population when they say you don’t have a religion, then no religion. Even though we practice some religion things, but in the end it’s like no religion country. All right. I see. But some people like the Buddhists like they they really believe. So they come to like temples like this. There’s like a no no photograph. Most people come here for just to get a good luck. They pray to get good luck. Oh, they believe in luck. They don’t maybe believe in the religion but they believe in the concept of luck. It’s more like a culture things and also like have a good karma. So they believe in they believe in luck and karma and yeahism this kind of thing even if they’re not otherwise serious about religion depends on the people obviously but yes yeah some people are very much into their religion right but yes but not so many overall most people non-religious but still believe in like karma luck and karma yeah yeah okay yeah it’s so many signs saying do not take a photograph so yeah but I can kind of see inside there’s gold statues and stuff. Yeah. Okay. But they but not only here they you they don’t usually let you take a take inside. Oh, okay. Just outside. Yeah. Because it’s kind of like it’s where the goat stays. Okay. Yeah. No worries. And what’s this thing that is called a can and in the end of the year they would use Oh, it’s like a bell. Yeah, it’s like a big bell called can in Japanese. Oh, okay. But they usually don’t use except for the in the end of the year. All right. Around the 12. They’re going to do 12 times. Ah, okay. And now we get sunny day. We get all the weather today. We get rain, we get wind, we get clouds, we get sun. It’s kind of like uh Yeah. summertime in Scotland. Only thing we are continuously having humidity. Yeah, I know. So, we’re walking back down to the town. Then, what is this weird creature right here? Yeah, this is something to put around temple and stuff so that you can get rid of a bad spiritual things and people place money so that to pray you always have to have a offering. Ah, you can’t pray for free. You must you must pay you must give an offering. It’s very good to have five yen. I’m going to borrow this. And five yen is always best to give it. Okay. So, it’s almost nothing anyway, right? Yeah. Five is like three cents because five yen is going in Japanese is a good connection. Ah, okay. Okay. So, five is the one you want. Yeah. My friend Nina invited me to Arima Onsen, one of the oldest hot spring towns in Japan.

Japan is famous for their Onsens, resorts and resort towns that are developed around the natural mineral-rich hot springs.

Arima Onsen is a town that’s popular for their Kinsen hot springs. This is golden-coloured water (or reddish-brown) that is full of iron. There’s areas in the town where you can dip your feet in the Kinsen water, and many bath houses where you can soak your whole body.

For me though, the local snacks were more interesting than the local water, and I wasn’t long in Arima town before stuffing my face.

First up was a Manju (steamed bun) that are common in all hot spring towns in Japan. It was stuffed with the adzuki sweet red bean paste and was super tasty.

We followed that up with some Dango (sweet rice dumplings) with a chestnut paste topping, as that flavour is Nina’s favourite.

And some Tansan Senbei, which are rice crackers made with the naturally-carbonated local water from a well in the town.

Arima Onsen was such a nice town to stroll around in. It’s popular with domestic Japanese tourists but they’re not all rowdy like foreign tourists, so it was still peaceful there.

Like other popular small towns that the locals like to visit on a day trip, everything starts to close by around 5 pm. I remember it was like that in Dazaifu, when it turned into a ghost town all of a sudden as we approached dusk.

One place that was still open though was an old family house that’s been turned into a restaurant. Nina and her family have eaten there many times on their trips to Arima Onsen over the years, so she knew the food was superb.

We ordered Kobe Beef sets where they brought us raw, highly-marbled slices of kobe beef in a basket that was steamed at our table. In just 6 minutes we were munching on some of the best meat this country has to offer. What a delicious way to end an awesome day. 😊✌🏻

  2. It's known as a Fox's wedding or two foxes dancing in the UK as well but isn't widely used. In fact across europe there's different but very similar names for a sunshower.
