OSAKA — A third-year junior high school student riding a bicycle here died after being struck by a tour bus on Oct. 29.


The bus hit a 15-year-old boy around 4:30 p.m. on Sakaisuji avenue in Osaka’s Chuo Ward. According to Osaka Prefectural Police’s Minami Police Station, the student was taken to a hospital but died about an hour later.


The bus driver, Koji Yamamoto, 58, from Yotsukaido, Chiba Prefecture, was arrested on the spot on suspicion of negligent driving resulting in injury under the law punishing automobile driving offenses. He reportedly admitted to the allegation and told investigators, “I collided with the bicycle that was traveling in front of me.” Police will upgrade the allegation to negligent driving resulting in death and continue their investigation.


The accident occurred on a five-lane, one-way northbound main road in central Osaka. The bicycle was traveling in the westernmost lane when it was reportedly hit by the bus during a lane change. Approximately 30 people were on the bus at the time. Police are investigating the details of the accident.
