Nippon Travel Agency Co. revealed that it is teaming up with Innovative Space Carrier Inc., a Tokyo-based startup developing reusable rockets, to launch a transport service that could connect Japan and U.S. cities within 60 minutes. The project, set to take shape in the 2030s, aims to revolutionise global travel by using outer space as a high-speed transit route, reported Kyodo News.

According to the companies, the rocket-powered vehicle will take off from an offshore launch site and could link any two points on Earth within an hour. For now, they’re considering it to be Tokyo and New York. The cost of this futuristic journey is expected to be around 100 million yen (₹5,79,15,590) for a round trip.

More About This Project

According to Kyodo News, Nippon Travel Agency President Keigo Yoshida said at a press conference in Tokyo that the company hopes the venture will bridge tourism and space technology. Advance applications for the service are scheduled to open in fiscal 2026. However, the rollout will happen in phases. The initial stage will include space-related experiences such as space-food tastings and guided tours of ground facilities. These early programs aim to familiarise travellers with the concept of commercial space journeys.

By the 2040s, the companies plan to take the experience further by offering orbital stays. Under the partnership, Nippon Travel will design and market the travel packages, while Innovative Space Carrier will focus on rocket technology and increasing flight efficiency. The startup’s president, Kojiro Hatada, said the company plans to lower travel costs by improving the number of flights each reusable vehicle can perform.
