Makishi Market in Okinawa, Japan

What’s up everybody? Today I’m in Okinawa, Japan, and we’re taking it to the Makkesishi Market. They’re known for their seafood. And here we got some really good seafood, and I can’t wait to show you guys the journey we went on to get this. We just got dropped off by the Uber. This is the closest the car can take us. So, we’re going to now walk to the entrance to the market. All right, so it says it’s open 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., but the last uh order is 8:00 p.m. So, it’s about 7:00 p.m. Let’s see if we can make it in time to get some food. Oh, it smells definitely fishy here. So you can see um this is where all they sell the fish in the morning and then we go upstairs and the cafeteria se that is Okay. Yes. Fish. Okay. Local fish. Local fish. Okay. So, we just spoke to the first person. Um, you can choose the fish down there and they bring upstairs to cook it. It’s about 500 yen per person to cook the fish on top of what the fish cost. So, now we’re heading up to the second floor for the cafeteria to see what they have to offer. Oh, it’s closed. Got all these So, sushimi. Look at all this. Got a lot of fish options here. It’s not as English friendly here. Crab. This is the English menu. The downstairs market closes at 7:30, 7:28. We found a good cafeteria. So, we’re going to get like a lobster like that and we’re going to bring it upstairs. So hopefully my guy I spoke to earlier is still there so we can grab a lobster and cook it here. I’m excited. Yeah. So, we got red lobster right there. Look at that. Wow. So, we’re going to weigh it now. And it tells the total price. It’s like ah [Music] they cook for 500 yen. Yeah. Let’s go. Yeah. That’s Yeah. [Music] Yeah. Okay. So, 9,500 yen for everything. Okay. Garlic steam. Yeah. Garlic steam. Yes. Stir fry. Stir fry. Does that work? Yeah. Okay. All right. So, the boss is going to take us to the next place. outside. Outside. So, they’re taking us to the alleyway now. We’re go to the restaurant. I’m not sure how they find the restaurant, but they’re going to cook us the lobster now. All right. Oh, here’s a seafood restaurant. Oh, look at all this. Was it 10:00 p.m.? Wow, there’s so many here already. [Music] I got Oh, here we go. I’m curious to see if it’s cheaper to order it here, but let’s find out. So, here’s the menu. Everything’s in Japanese again. They got like sushimi. They got different types of crab up here. Wow. Got a English menu. Now, look at this. Oh, lobster salt bug. She’s sign 2,500. Oh, did we pay? Overpay. Let’s see. Wow. Sorry. Let’s see. Wow. What an experience. I had no idea what was going on. Uh usually when stuff goes that fastpaced, it’s like I’m getting scammed, but I don’t think we got scammed cuz this looks like a legit restaurant of other people being there. And I kind of feel bad. The upstairs restaurant, I thought we’d be able to bring the lobster up there and cook it there, but the business owner actually took us to this other restaurant instead. I’m very excited for the seafood. I’m a big fan of seafood and it’s hard to find cheap seafood around the world. So, if you didn’t know, uh the local beer in Okinawa is boring beer. So, let’s try this out. I love Saporro here a lot already. So, high hopes for this one. M. It’s very refreshing, very crisp. Uh I don’t like it as much as the Sephora beer support beer. I think it’s more full flavor. Here, the flavor goes away a little bit faster than I expect. Uh, one thing that shocked me is that everyone I’ve talked to knows Chinese. That’s something I don’t know if it’s common just in this area, this island, but in Tokyo and mainland like area of Japan, that’s not common. Oh, so this is a lobster tail right here. And I’m guessing the big part of the lobster is coming. So for this one, we got like butter grilled. Look how big that is. What? That I feel like alone is like $10 to $15 back in the US for each one. So, wow. Good deal. Oh, wow. So, it’s asking people and everyone seemed to get that. Wasn’t sure what it was. And she said it’s like a sea snail. Like that thing is massive. Like look at my hand. And look how big that thing is. They got lobsters down there. Oh, look at those live lobsters. These lobsters, I don’t know if they’re dead already or they’re sleeping. Uh the clams are here. They got stir fry. M. Look at all that lobster. Oh, wow. We’re waiting on one more dish, but all the seafood has arrived. Like, I don’t even know where to start. We got like the lobster soup right here. Uh the stir-fried clams, and then the lobster tail here, uh grilled with butter on it. All right, so let’s start with the lobster tail here. The lobster was really alive maybe 10, 20 minutes ago, so this is as fresh as it gets. Like literally tank to table. Oh, look at that. Scared I’m going to Everything’s going to fly out. Look at that. M m. Let’s try this out. M. As fresh as it gets, it literally only it has butter. And the flavor is so good already. We have these other seasonings right over here that we can add. But I think by itself, it’s good enough already. I don’t want to mask the freshness of this dish. Next up is the soup, the lobster, the main part of the lobster. Earlier, we had the tail. So, let’s scoop this out. It’s kind of like a porridge version. Here we go. Not sure how you really eat this. Take some of the soup. Take some of the soup here. Let’s start with some of the soup with the rice in it. It’s got like porridge. M. The flavor is very rich with the lobster in it. Wow. And it’s got that butter in it, too. Let’s try lobster now. I’m not sure how I get the Oh, it’s hot. Not sure how you’re supposed to eat the meat. Did they like steal the meat? I’m not Oh, we lost it. That was my biggest worry. They lost one right there. Do not do not do that at all. Let’s try one more. It’s hot. That’s a lot messier than I expected. Let’s try this. It’s going to be probably pretty warm. [Music] M. So fresh tasting. Wow. I think the freshest lobster I’ve ever had in my life. And for the price about like $40, $50. Such a good deal. Wow. Next up, we got the clams here. It was cooked um stir fry style. So good. It’s got like uh the stir fry flavor. They got green onions. I think a tomato or mushroom pepper in it. A lot of flavor in it. And it’s really good. Wow. I can eat this for a while. Last time we got this noodle dish. We didn’t know what name it was, so we have to translate it. But this is a great side dish for everything. It’s pretty good. It’s kind of just like butter noodles with some onions and carrots on top. Not as much flavor, but a good way to kind of like reset your stomach before you eat other seafood. We finished all the food, it was so good. Wow. Um, I think in terms of the best money spent, I would say is the clams. They stir fried it with like onions and ginger. The flavor was very good. Maybe fragrant. The the lobster was great, but there wasn’t too much uh flavor depth in it. Maybe I chose the wrong style to cook it, or I should add more seasoning into it. And then the soup was also good, but I also think it could add a little bit more flavoring. So, since we came here a little bit last minute, we were in a rush. Um, I’m happy we didn’t eat on the second floor inside the market. I felt more of a cafeteria style. Uh, where we’re currently eating in like the alleyway. Uh, it’s a way better vibe. There’s more people here. So, I recommend coming here instead of the second floor in the cafeteria. Uh, I’d say it’s about the same price as well, but a better ambiance here. I can’t believe I’m screaming in Japan. Like, one thing I never thought I’d be saying. This was 1,900. Thank you for watching the video. Hope you guys enjoyed it.
