The selection committee for the Sawamura Award, which is given to starter has performed the best in the season, was held at a hotel in Tokyo on the 27th (chaired by Tsuneo Horiuchi, a former The Giants), and decided that Nippon-Ham-Ham pitcher Hiromi Ito would receive the award. さらに、オリックス時代に２１年から３年連続３度の沢村賞を受賞したドジャース・山本がポストシーズンで２試合連続で完投して、メジャーでも高く評価されている点に触れて「完投といったら投手の華。名誉と言ったらおかしいかもしれませんけども。カーショーが『原点回帰を見た。完投というのはそれほどすごい』という談話をだしていましたが、やっぱりアメリカでもこうなのかって。ですから新庄監督の考え方に私は非常に賛同して、この沢村賞に関してはありがとうと思っております」と賛辞を惜しまなかった。
