🇯🇵 FLY IN & FORK OUT: Nagoya Japan Food Tour | From Morning Sets to Izakaya Nights

They say travel broadens the mind. We
say it broadens the waistline. Welcome to Flying Forkout, our new MasX food
travel series. Today we’re in Nagoya, Japan, where a free breakfast comes with
your coffee, lunch comes with red miso, and dinner. Well, we’ll worry about that after a
snack. Forks out. We’re about to eat your city. This series is all about food. From breakfast to
dinner, we eat, eat, eat. We’re going to focus on three core meals. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
And in between, we’ll do some snacking. So, we’re not sure exactly where this day is going to
take us. All we know is we’re starting off with a morning set breakfast, which is traditional
to Nagoya, and we’re going to end at an Izakaya because we are in Japan. And when in
Japan, you have to finish the night at at an Izakaya. The rest of it, well, who knows? Let’s
go. Let’s see where the day leads us. Okay, fly in hungry. That’s my kind of arrival. Forks
out, Nagoya. We are about to eat this city. Are you ready? Let’s eat it. Nagoya is a vibrant
city in central Japan. Known for its blend of modern innovation and rich cultural heritage.
It’s famous for its impressive Nagoya Castle, delicious local cuisine, and its role as a
major hub for Japan’s automotive industry. Hey Wes, who are you talking to? Where
are we going? I’m hungry, guys. Okay, first up is breakfast. Breakfast is always a good
way to start the day. So when you’re in a Nagoya, if a friend says to you, “Hey, let’s go for
morning.” Well, what is morning? So morning set is something that’s very popular in Nagoya where
you order a hot drink or any drink and you get a free simple breakfast with it. Now there’s a myth
about where this actually started or at least a um a belief that it started in Nagoya and the
truth is started in a city called Ichinomya City which is about 30 minutes from here. So
it’s not actually Nagoya but in any case it’s a very simple traditional breakfast. So,
we’re going to go and try to find a nice breakfast place with morning set. It’s going
to be a long day of eating. So, maybe uh maybe before we start the day of eating, I should
go empty my stomach first. Oh, dude. Go ahead. Okay, I’m back. That feels so much better. Let’s
go find our morning set. All right, let’s go. So, as we walk around Nagoya, we see a
lot of places that are serving morning set. It’s very common in Nagoya all over the
place. This one serves a lot of croissants, a lot of sweet morning sets, but um we’re
looking for something a bit more traditional. So, let’s keep walking. Let’s try and find something
a little bit more traditional like toast and   eggs. Yep. We are looking for Nagoya style, not
Paris style. It’s so cool to walk around here. We think we found a really nice place. Uh
they have a morning set. Um looks really good. We checked with Professor Google and he
gave it the thumbs up. Reviews were good. So,   let’s go check it out. I trust you,
Professor Google. Toast and egg rice ball 2 looking good. They have free Wi-Fi
and power outlets. Great for tourists. Okay, so as explained before, you order
your drink, hot drink, cold drink, and then um with it comes a free free breakfast.
It’s included. So this one is an onigiri, which is like a rice bowl. Um and a miso
soup. So, western and traditional Japanese. Traditional Japanese uh morning
set and the western morning set. Take a look at this toast. Look how
thick it is. Smells good. Butter, thick slice of toast, hardboiled egg, and
some red bean paste. And the Japanese one, it’s a red miso soup. Like Nagoya is known for
their red miso soup, rice bowl or onigiri and a um worabi mochi which is like a just a
sweet traditional Japanese sweet. Okay, so first I’m going to try the onigiri. I’m not
sure if it’s plain or if there’s anything inside. It’s the seaweed. Seaweed with some uh rice.
Japanese rice. Here we go. Rice balls gone global. Everyone’s loving Japan’s rice balls. Some sticky rice wrapped in seaweed. It’s pretty
good. And some salt. Yep. Pretty good. All right, let’s try some red miso soup. Give it a nice
little stir. This is Nagoya’s Pride Hacho miso. It’s good, right? Oh, yeah. That’s good. I like
the red miso soup. Gives it like an additional depth. Like um it’s more like a um a richer
flavor, if I could say. Yes. Rich and bold. Let’s give that a try. My friend said it’s like
a sophisticated slime. Very sticky and jelly like. So if you can see it. Jiggly. Go ahead.
I always wanted to eat a Dragon Quest slime. It’s cold, chewy, a little bit sweet, and
most of all, delicious. Interesting. So, I’m going to take a sip of my matcha latte. That’s
my matcha latte. Cuz I just love matcha latte, guys. Any country, doesn’t matter where I go,
any country, I have to get a matcha latte. Yes, you do. Let’s take a sip. I feel you drink
matcha latte 50 times a month. Oishi, I knew it. Oishi just means delicious. Let’s try
the toast. Well, it’s a simple slice of toast, white bread with butter. Um, let’s take a bite.
It might surprise you, but Japan’s bread game is strong. It’s good, right? Mhm. Delicious.
Nice. Thick. Yeah. Looking good. Buttery. Very delicious. Great start to the day. Let’s try
some red bean paste with this. I’m curious. The the actual name for it is anko. Yes. Anko is   one of the most beloved traditional
ingredients in Japanese desserts. Delicious. So there you go. Nice shelled hardboiled egg. I think it’s hard
boiled. Let’s break it open and see. Okay. Yep. Hardboiled egg. The morning set style. And
there we go. Cheers. Somehow Morning Set’s egg is always hard boiled. Mhm. Any comment?
A typical hardboiled egg. Delicious. Thank you. This place offers perfect blend of old
Japan and modern cafe comfort. Wooden tones, soft light, and a calm vibe that makes
you want to stay a little longer. All right, so we just wrapped up our morning set
breakfast here at the name of the restaurant is Okagean. Food was great. Perfect. Five out
of five for the food. The um the bill, guys, that’s the best part. The bill is the equivalent
to about for two people for the coffees or drinks and the morning set was about $10 US. Um,
so about $5 per person. And don’t forget that Japan is not a tip culture. So there’s
no tip on top of that. It’s just literally $10 for a nice delicious breakfast. It’s worth
it. Check it out. We’re going on to the next one. We’re going to try to figure out where to
go for lunch. While we try to figure that out,   we’ll snack along the way. See you guys
soon. All right, let’s go. Japan’s long, hot summer has finally ended. It’s
a perfectly nice day to walk around. Wow, look at this. It’s so pretty. So, we
just got a um we’re walking by this place and There is always room for dessert.
Um, is anything wrong? It’s a bit of a miscommunication. This is not the one I
meant to get, but that happens, right? When   when there’s a language barrier. So, I meant
to get the half vanilla, half strawberry one, but I got the all strawberry one. All good. So,
let’s give this a try and see how it is. But, like I said, we were walking by this place and
it just looked too pretty. Smelled too good. Smelled like strawberries. So, we had to stop by
to get one. So, here we go. Yes. Strawberry sweet smell. Strawberry first. Oh, I wish there
were two. Strawberry is my favorite fruit. Tastes like a strawberry. I bet you. So, it’s a soft serve strawberry ice cream. I   like soft serve ice creams. It’s really
good. So, I’m going to enjoy this while we walk. It seems like this is a very
popular shop. People keep coming here. Wa! What is this street? A giant gate that gives
old Japan vibes. And it’s packed with people. Okay, so we are at a very popular uh place in
Nagoya. This is called Osu Shopping Street or some people call it Osu Shopping District.
It’s more accurately a district. It’s not   just one street. There’s like a whole section of
shopping. Very popular. If you come to Nagoya, check this out. Lots of places to shop, places to
eat, cafes. We’re here to eat. So, let’s go check out some places to eat. OSU shopping street
began centuries ago around Osu Canon Temple, but today it’s packed with street food,
vintage shops, and energy levels rivaling a festival. Tradition and trend collide,
and everyone’s welcome to snack through it. Okay, guys. So, we saw this place here.
It looks good. The one we’re trying is um Mitarashi Kinako. Yes. I think I pronounced it
right. So, it has like a little soy powder on it. And um remind me what is this? What is this
made of? That’s rice cake mochi. Chewy mochi rice cake with with a um soy powder. I’ve had it
before. I actually liked it the last time. So, that’s why when I was walking by and I saw it,
I said, I need to have myself one of these. Yes, we should. Hopefully, this one’s good. Looks
good. Okay. So, we’re going to try this. It’s messy, guys. So, it’s a lot
of powder on it. Don’t choke. Okay, here we go. The camera. If the wind blows
now, someone’s getting a soy powder shower. Is it good? Mhm. Chewy. I love mochi’s chewy
texture. It’s good. Is it very sweet? No, it’s not sweet. It’s just a perfect
sweetness. And the powder, as you can tell, makes your mouth a bit dry, but it’s it’s really
really good. So nutritious, too. It’s nutritious, of course. Really protein. I’m going to
enjoy this one while we keep walking. Every time we come to Japan, we have to
remind ourselves if you’re walking around,   you’re eating, anywhere you go, take a
garbage bag because there’s no garbage anywhere. Yep. Japan is known for its
clean streets, even without garbage cans. Wow. What is that? Well, I don’t
know if I should be giving this away,   but apparently it’s the secret for Japanese
men, you know, to perform all night long um multiple times. So, I hear I’ve never tried it.
I’m not Japanese, but it’s like a snake powder and um a snake extract. Very interesting. Does
this really work? Snake powder and extract. I may come back here. Never mind. Just uh walked by and we saw this soup dumpling
place. And I love soup dumpling. Everywhere we go, like any city we see soup dumpling, we have to
try it. So soup dumpling. Let’s try it. But this is pan fried soup dumpling. Is it really?
Yeah. The sign says so. Do you think it’s   still good? We just have to try it. I guess
there’s only one way to find out. Yes. put aside. I’m learning Japanese as I do this.
You are doing good. Okay, so soup dumpling. It’s fresh out of the pan. What do they say in
Japanese? They say itadakimasu. That’s right. Be careful. It’s hot. So, this one is a pan fried
soup dump. Still has the soup inside. It’s still like when you break it open. Still leaks out
soup. But um it’s not bad. I’m going to enjoy this as we continue to walk and continue to eat
this city. Okay, but save me a soup dumpling. Next mission, lunch. All right, guys. We
decided where we’re going to go for lunch. Now, we are in Nagoya. Nagoya is famous for Nagoya
Castle. So, we figured why not check out Nagoya Castle. And right next to Nagoya Castle, there’s
a street, a food street called I’m going to try to pronounce this Kinshachi Yokocho. Pronounced
it correct? Thank you. If I didn’t correct me, let me know in the comments below. So, we’re
going to go check out that food street. They   serve a lot of traditional Nagoya type food. So,
we’re we’re in Nagoya. Let’s go have some local Nagoya food. So, let’s go. Let’s go check
it out. All right, we’re hopping on a bus. Nagoya Castle is here, but we
can’t show our footage because   of copyright rules. Sorry, but it was amazing. So, we have arrived at Kinshachi Yokocho . We’re
going to go get some food to eat. Uh we’re here at zone Yoshinawo. Yoshinawo is the son of Tokugawa
Ieyasu. So let’s go guys. Let’s go get some food. Right next to Nagoya Castle, Kinshachi Yokocho is
a food street where history meets appetite. It’s packed with all the Nagoya classics from Misokatsu
to Hitsumabushi. Basically the castle’s tastiest neighbor. Now, this Yoshinawo zone, um, like
we said before, is traditional Nagoya food. So, let’s go sample some Nagoya, some local Nagoya
food. Sounds good. All right. So, we’ve decided to get some tempura. So, what tempura is, if you
don’t know, tempura is usually like um whether it’s vegetables or shrimp or even chicken um
fried up in a batter called tempura. All right, so we got a lot of food here. I’m just going to
sample everything and let you guys know what I think of it. So again, we had oni for breakfast
and now we’re having it for lunch. This oni looks like it’s mixed with a bit of shrimp tempura
in it. Rice, shrimp tempura wrapped in seaweed. The rice balls filled with shrimp tempura is
called tenusu. One of Nagoya’s signature dish. Shrimp tempura. And the on gate. Very
good. Let me try the tempura. Now, all these dishes have tempura, but let
me try this one first. Squash tempura. Crispy. This one here. Oh, chicken. Let’s
try a chicken tempura. This is my first time having a chicken tempura. I may be wrong.
Yeah, chicken tempura isn’t too common, but it’s actually a local specialty in some
regions. M. That chicken is tender, very juicy, flavorful with the crispy tempura batter wrapped
around it. So good. It’s like KFC, but better. Yes. Finger licking good. Very nice. All right, so
that’s the first dish. I’m going to try the soba noodle. Yeah. Tempura crumbs on the side. Um, this
is the sauce that you dip the soba noodle in. So, you just pour the sauce. Yeah. Mix in some green
onions. Mix in some mioga. Mioa. What is mi yoga? It’s a type of ginger plant. Let me try that
on its own just to see what it tastes like.   Refreshing. It’s like an onion flavor. Okay. You
dip half of it and then you eat it. you slurping. Well, how is it? It’s a bit of an acquired taste.
Uh the first time I had it, I was like, “Okay, it’s okay.” But then you get used to it the more
you have it. All right, so let’s try some of this uh tempura crumbs in the sauce apparently
gives it a different flavor. I am not an expert at this. If you see Japanese people
eat it, there’s a slurping technique that   goes along with it. Like you can really taste
the soba noodle and you so you would be able to distinguish the different types of soba noodle.
And apparently all that magic happens through the slurping which I had not yet mastered. Maybe
give me a couple more years I will master that. Slurping enhances the flavor. I’m going to try
to slurp it. It’s going to be fun. Nice try, Wes. But the noodles won this round. It picks
up some of the tempura from the sauce and it adds a bit of a crispy texture to it. So, it
just changes up the the the different bites. Great customization. That’s so noodle. Next dish,
tempura don with a miso, red miso. This which is traditional to Nagoya sauce over it. So, we’ll
give that a try. But before that, looks like another red miso soup. Nagoya is welcoming
you. Let’s taste this one and see how it is. So there’s in here there’s um a tempura egg,
tempura vegetables, tempura shrimp, and tempura chicken. So we’ve tried the tempura chicken
already. Let’s give the uh tempura egg shot. Tempura egg. Interesting. The yolks so soft and
silky. Love that. Yep. What is it? This one looks to be just a tempura seaweed. Oh, seaweed. Just
tempura seaweed. I love the aroma. Wow. I can hear the sound. That’s beef and seaweed. Very nice.
Good. And always one of my favorites, tempura shrimp. Yes, the start. You don’t like tempura
shrimp? There’s something wrong with you. This is good. Usually tempura uses a light sauce, but this
miso version takes it to a whole new level. M. So good. So, I’m going to enjoy this meal. Let me
help you, too. We enjoyed all the food here. All right, guys. So, we just wrapped up lunch
at Tokugawa Chube, I believe, is the name of the   restaurant. This is in Japanese. That’s how it
was translated for me. So, food was good. Yeah, like five stars for the food and the whole
ambiance. Everything was really nice. Yes,   it’s got such a peaceful, relaxing
vibe. What’s our next flavor adventure, guys? From the minute I came here, one thing one
thing caught my eye. This gold. Now, I’m always attracted to gold. Gold ice cream. What? Gold ice
cream. I mean, come on. Could you get better than that? Gold mixed with ice cream. Let’s give it
a try. Definitely. Yes. I’m curious to know what   the tofu is like. So, they mix the tofu in the
ice cream. We’ll find out. Must be healthier. Here we go, guys. Toku Kawaguchi
has been making tofu for over 70 years now. We’re super curious
how their tofu ice cream tastes. That’s the real gold leaf. So shiny. Wow. Gold sprinkles, too. Is it as good as it looks? We’ll soon
find out. And apparently it’s real gold sprinkles. So once again, gold leaf
tofu ice cream. Let’s give it a try. How does it taste? Do you taste tofu and gold? So
how does it taste? So I definitely um taste some tofu flavor in it. Okay. So it’s it’s um first
and foremost oi very delicious. I mean it’s an ice cream guys. Come on. Gold ice cream. It has to be
good, right? For sure. Very good. But you do taste   the uh tofu in it. Tofu flavor. The gold you don’t
really taste it much. It’s I think it’s more for the looks more than anything. It’s just for the
looks. Tastes like good good soft serve ice cream. I’m going to enjoy this. You guys can watch me
enjoy it. One more bite. Should we tell him that he has a gold flake stuck to his lip? There is
still so much more to discover in Yoshinawo zone, but we are moving to Muneharu zone now. Okay,
so we’ve arrived at the Muneharu zone. We’re going to go check it out. Get some more snacks,
something to eat. Let’s go. At the Muneharu zone,   things get a bit more casual. Street food,
snacks, and nagoya flavors you can grab on the go. Now he is buying kinshachi yaki, a popular
street snack. All right, guys. So, we bought two. We bought a um like an ankle red bean, the same
thing we’ve been having all day. So, um it’s kind of like a It’s a fish shape. That’s the shape
of shachihoko. So, one red bean, one custard. Here we go. Let’s try this. Which one is that? So,
that’s a red bean worm. What does it taste like? How can I describe it? Like it’s like a a batter, like a donut type
batter, flour type batter. And inside is um the ankle, the red bean. Is it good? It’s
really good. I think as long as you like red bean and if you like sweets, you should
like this. This is the custard one. So the red bean one was really good. Let’s try the
custard one. Hm. Custard is my favorite. Mhm. So, if you’re familiar with the
custard taste, that’s pretty much what it is. Like a custard taste, sweet
inside the inside the batter. And it’s um it’s baked. It’s not fried. It’s like a baked
sweet. Crispy meets creamy. The perfect combo. This zone has a lot more great food, but we
decided to save some space for dinner. Okay, so we’re finished here at the Muneharu zone uh by
Nagoya Castle. That wraps up lunch/snacking. So, we’re about to just take a walk,
check out the rest of Nagoya,   and just wait for some Izakayas to open up
and end the night at some Izakayas. Let’s go. Grand finale is a Izakaya time. Let’s walk
it off and make room for the final round. Guys, we just took a walk through a park. You
know, look, we saw a beautiful park. Thought,   “Okay, this looks nice. Water fountain. Let’s
um take a stroll.” I regret it. In 30 seconds, like literally 30 seconds of just walking
through the park, I have received about 15   to 20 mosquito bites all over my body,
neck, arms, head, everywhere. So yeah, um that’s the worst 30 seconds I could remember
of being in a park. So yeah, it’s um hey, but you know, the content must continue and uh we’re
walking trying to find an Izakaya and let’s hope we find some place really nice, really memorable
so that all these mosquito bites right now that I’m suffering hopefully that’s a distant memory
in about 20 minutes. It was a massive attack. Still a bit early, but the Izakayas
are waking up for the night. So many nice places opened up, so it’s hard
to choose. Like every everywhere we walk, the food smells good. The atmosphere looks nice.
I mean, albeit it’s still early, but let’s choose one and let’s get the party started. Now we’re
in Sumiyoshi-cho, one of Nagoya’s liveliest night streets. Quiet by day, but after dark it’s all
neon music and late night energy. Here we go. All right, we saw this Izakaya. Everybody was
friendly, so we decided, hey, let’s stop in,   have a drink, eat some food, check it out.
Why not? Daikoku is a lively standing bar in Sumiyoshi-cho. The friendly staff had us feeling
welcome instantly and the vibe was buzzing. They offered juicy grilled pork and
vegetable skewers at amazing prices   and a wide variety of drinks for a night out
in Nagoya. People were coming and going the whole time. That’s what we love about standing
bars. They’re so easy to stop by. of the dog. That’s the Izakaya vibe. Loud, friendly,
and full of energy. All right, guys. We just finished with Izakaya number one. Dare
I say Izakaya number one? I’m not sure. Like, I’m really full, guys. It’s been a full long
day of food, food, food. But in this atmosphere, you just want to keep going. You want to keep
eating. You want to go to Izakaya number two.   Should we go to Izakaya number two? What do you
think? Big yes. Round two. Yeah. You think we should go? Yes. All right, let’s take a walk
and if we see anotherIzakaya that we like and food smells good, we’ll check it out. All
right, let’s go. Our night has just begun. So, we spoke to the guys at the first Izakaya
and they told us walk down this street. I don’t know. They gave us some uh directions.
walk down the street, then make a right,   and we’ll see a bunch of nice Izakayas. So, we’re
going to go check it out. Wait for me. Number two. So, just about an hour ago, it was some light
out. It’s kind of dead, but as it gets darker, it starts to pick up. More and more
people are coming out to eat and drink   and to have a good time. So, let’s join the
party, guys. I’m in. It’s getting excited. Here looks good. It’s another alleyway with some more Izakayas bars. Who knows?
Let’s go take a look. Yes, let’s go. Tiny alleys, big energy, Izakaya’s restaurants,   and good vibes everywhere. It’s lively,
but still feels so safe. Only in Japan. This hidden stairs caught our
eyes, so we decided to take a look. It seems like an izakaya or restaurant. Hm,
interesting. We are at iszakaya number two, guys. I don’t know if I should do another one,
but isa number two. So, let’s order some drinks, some food, and see where the night goes.
The mysterious stairs led us straight into Tabin Todoroki, a sizzling Tapanyaki bar
with friendly staff and energy to spare. Come pie, guys. Wes is vibing to the music.
We tried their assorted appetizer plate. Each dish had its own twist. You can tell
they put real care into every detail. The bar was buzzing with regulars,
everyone laughing and having a good   time. One of them joined our table. A
friendly face with a mysterious vibe. Do you know much of the night life? Like a
lot of the night life. A little bit. You You want the unique unique place? Unique place. I
know. Unique place. I show you unique place in Yeah, very good place. Let’s Let’s do it. I want
to see. Okay, let’s go. Let’s go. All right, so we just finished at the second Isakaya. It was
a nice place. A lot of reggae dance hall music,   which brought me back to my childhood growing
up. So, it was nice. Um, so we thought, okay, let’s check out one more place before we call it a
night. And we’re going to check out a place that’s um in Japan is called Correct. Correct. Yeah.
Yeah. So, I never I don’t think I’ve ever been to a place before, but um they serve snacks. I
don’t know. No, they have a unique system. Unique system. So, I don’t know what that means,
but places has a unique system. Hopefully, we can film a little bit inside, show you
guys what it’s like. Um and then we’ll call   it a night after that. So, let’s go check
out this place. I’m a little bit concerned. Should I be concerned? Hm. I don’t know what to
say. I’m a little bit concerned. So, let’s see what happens. All right. We just have to follow
the mysterious friend. Let’s see what happens. Little did we know that encounter would take

ABOUT MASX:

MASX [pronounced Mas-X] are experts at group party-travel and nightlife and was created to “Move The People” and “Awaken The Culture” through celebrations that will “Spread The Music” and “Xcite Passion For Life” worldwide.

We use the knowledge and expertise of our local guides to create content that we hope will allow others to “Live Ultimate Xperiences (L.U.X.)”. Our tours and content are created to provide the best experiences for our clients and subscribers.

We aim to create travel experiences and content that will entertain, educate and unite – ONE COUNTRY AT A TIME, TO UNITE ONE WORLD IN OUR LIFETIME! 🌎 Along our journey, we will use our platform to inspire and motivate others to live life to the fullest.

United as one people, one culture, and one music, we will excite passion for life and help create a world filled with magic and unforgettable memories!!
