TOKYO: Hundreds of protesters, unwavering in their opposition, gathered at one of Tokyo’s busiest train stations on Sunday to voice their dissent against US President Donald Trump’s upcoming visit to Japan. In front of Shimbashi Station, the protesters, united in their cause, fervently chanted slogans such as “We don’t need dictators in the world,” and “We oppose Trump and Netanyahu.”

Shimbashi Station is a major transportation hub in Tokyo’s Minato Ward, historically significant as one of Japan’s oldest railway stations, and a lively area with many office buildings, restaurants, and bars that cater to commuters.

The protesters, in a show of unity, marched through the upscale avenues of the Ginza district, carrying a large banner that read, “We reject the world that Donald Trump is creating.” One of the protest leaders expressed strong outrage over “the expense and extravagance” of the visit.

The protesters, with a diverse range of concerns, voiced their criticism of Japan’s military budget, which the new Prime Minister, Takaichi Sanae, plans to increase, reportedly under pressure from President Trump. Their concerns stemmed from their political awareness and a desire to maintain the country’s peaceful direction. They expressed their concerns to their government, stating, “Don’t buy weapons from Israel.”

During the demonstration, a woman, her voice filled with urgency, expressed her concern that American democracy is turning into a dictatorship. She emphasized the need for people to acknowledge the ongoing genocide in Gaza and pointed out that Donald Trump’s America is supporting this genocide.

Trump’s imminent arrival in Tokyo on October 27, where he is expected to meet with Emperor Naruhito, is a highly anticipated event. A meeting with Prime Minister Takaichi is scheduled for October 28 at Akasaka Palace in Tokyo.

During the visit, the Tokyo Sky Tree, one of the tallest structures in the world, and the Tokyo City Hall will be illuminated to welcome the American president.
