On October 26, commencing at 6:15 p.m. local time (7:15 p.m. on October 26, Japan time) for approximately 20 minutes, Ms. TAKAICHI Sanae, Prime Minister of Japan, who is visiting Malaysia to attend the ASEAN-related Summits’ meetings, held a Japan-Australia Summit Meeting with the Hon. Anthony Albanese, MP, Prime Minister of the Commonwealth of Australia. The overview of the meeting is as follows:
(1) At the outset, Prime Minister Albanese conveyed his congratulations on Prime Minister TAKAICHI’s appointment as Prime Minister. In response, Prime Minister TAKAICHI expressed her gratitude and stated that Japan looks forward to strengthening the strategic cooperative relationship between Japan and Australia. She also mentioned that Japan and Australia are likeminded countries that have the will and capability to play a leading role in realizing a “Free and Open Indo-Pacific” (FOIP).
(2) The two leaders exchanged views on the security environment and strategic challenges in the Indo-Pacific region, including the situations in East Asia, and concurred that they would further strengthen cooperation.
(3) The two leaders shared concerns about the impact of recent export control measures on critical minerals on supply chains and concurred that Japan and Australia would advance concrete cooperation in the field of economic security, including supply chains for critical minerals.
(4) In addition, the two leaders affirmed that Japan and Australia would promote multi-layered cooperation with U.S. and other likeminded countries, including Japan-US-Australia, Japan-Australia-India-U.S.(Quad), and Japan-Australia-New Zealand-ROK. Furthermore, they concurred that they would strengthen bilateral cooperation across a broad range of areas, including security, economic, and people-to-people exchanges to elevate the ‘Special Strategic Partnership’ between Japan and Australia to even greater heights, looking ahead to next year’s 50th anniversary of the signing of the Japan-Australia Basic Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation.
