On October 26, from 5:50 p.m. local time (6:50 p.m. Japan time) and lasted approximately 20 minutes, Ms. TAKAICHI Sanae, Prime Minister of Japan, who is visiting Malaysia to attend the ASEAN-related Summit Meetings, held a meeting with H.E. Dato’ Seri Anwar bin Ibrahim, Prime Minister of Malaysia. The overview is as follows.
(1) At the outset, Prime Minister Anwar welcomed Prime Minister TAKAICHI’s participation in the ASEAN-related Summit Meetings and expressed his intention to work closely with Prime Minister TAKAICHI for the further development of the friendly relations between the two countries. In response, Prime Minister TAKAICHI expressed her respect for Malaysia’s efforts as the ASEAN Chair and stated her wish to further strengthen cooperation in various fields with Malaysia, which is an important comprehensive and strategic partner for the realization of a Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP).
(2) Regarding cooperation in the field of security, the two leaders welcomed the hand-over of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and rescue boats from Japan to Malaysia through Japan’s Official Security Assistance (OSA) as well as the new agreement for the provision of a diving support vessel and other equipment. Prime Minister TAKAICHI stated that through such efforts she wished to contribute to regional peace and stability, to which Prime Minister Anwar expressed his appreciation for Japan’s cooperation.
In the economic field, the two leaders highly appreciated the progress in bilateral decarbonization cooperation between the two countries, such as Carbon dioxide Capture and Storage (CCS), ammonia-fired power generation and nuclear energy, and concurred to accelerate discussions toward the early signing of the Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM) and to strengthen the initiatives of the Asia Zero-Emission Community (AZEC). They also confirmed that they will further enhance cooperation in economic security such as stable LNG supply, rare earths, and AI.
(3) The two leaders exchanged views on various regional and international issues, including the situation in the South China Sea, the situation in Myanmar, and developments in the Middle East.
Prime Minister TAKAICHI expressed her respect for Prime Minister Anwar’s efforts in the ceasefire agreement between the Kingdom of Cambodia and the Kingdom of Thailand, and conveyed Japan’s decision to provide Malaysia with monitoring equipment and supporting ceasefire agreement.
