KYOTO Antique TourHello , it’s the season when the scent of osmanthus fills the air. How are you all doing? This time, we’ll be touring antique shops and cafes in Kyoto’s Shichijo district and the Toji Temple Junk Market. I hope you’ll join us for a stroll and enjoy the experience. Our first stop was a teahouse near Toji Temple in Nishikujo, where you can enjoy Japanese tea. This shop opened in 2019. Centered around the tea ceremony, the shop combines Japanese tea with food, art, and aromas, offering a variety of experiences through tea. You can choose from approximately 200 varieties of tea leaves. We pour thin matcha (thin) over thin-skinned manju and enjoy Japanese sweets that change with the tea. It ‘s said that literary master Mori Ogai also preferred this style of eating. First, we’ll enjoy the aroma. The gentle sound of hot water pouring is soothing to the ears , and we’ll enjoy the different flavors of each of the three types of tea. Savoring the different sweetness levels, we truly feel like we’re playing with tea. The fragrant olive and thick tea yokan, paired with the sour and slightly bitter plum, create a refreshing taste. It really touched my heart, and I felt the profound depth of Japanese culture. It was a truly relaxing and delicious experience. Next up… I headed to an antique shop in Kyoto that I’d always wanted to visit. It’s a roastery and gallery run by Kyoto cafe “Wife & Husband.” The first floor is a coffee roastery, and the second floor is an antique gallery. There’s a display of vintage plates, all in excellent condition and with beautiful designs. It’s a shop that makes you feel like you’re visiting a flea market overseas. ♪ Is this a French pigeon lamp? They’ve researched the lamp’s details… I’m drawn to the blown glass and its elegant, French form. ☺ Finally, I’d like to introduce some of my purchases. The shop manager also displays antiques he’s collected at flea markets. It was a place I’d definitely like to visit again ♡ The lights of Kyoto came on quickly, and dusk was fast approaching. Today, I headed to the Toji Temple junk market. Before that, I stopped by a coffee stand in a back alley just off Umekoji-Nishi Station. I ordered at the entrance. This shop, renovated from a century-old townhouse, offers specialty coffee and sandwiches made with Kyoto vegetables. This sandwich has been a staple since the shop opened. The duck loin and Kujo leek were delicious. Paired with Tanba shimeji mushrooms, it had a Japanese flavor. The white miso, pepper, and subtle sweetness were delicious 😊 The combination with the dark chocolate was exquisite. It was delicious, thank you for the meal. Next, I headed to an antique shop I’d seen on Instagram. “Ponpon Antiques” opened in March 2025. Here, you can find Western-style confections from “A/J” in Nada Ward, Kobe. Apparently , there is no storefront; they only sell their products at Ponpon. Apparently, the owner renovated this former dairy shop. The display, utilizing the original refrigerator, is stylish. The beautiful platters make food look spectacular … The selection of miscellaneous goods is also wonderful and captivating… The owner is very friendly. He shared with us how both antiques and modern items are great for everyday use … I ‘m drawn to the refreshing glassware and colors. Looking forward to discovering more items, this shop is one I’d like to visit again.♡ I visited Toji Temple for the “Junk Market,” held on the first Sunday of every month. Today, the autumn rain was pattering on and off… Unfortunately, it was rainy, but it was still fun to stroll around.♫ I came across “Antiques and Cafe Motomachi Imari” on Otonaka Street in Kobe. Their glassware and saucers are also captivating. From bargains to expensive finds, there’s a row of vibrantly colored lacquered bowls… And a lovely teapot! (The prices were also impressive.) This was the booth of “Kiyomizu Antiques” in front of the south gate of Toji Temple. It was a feast for the eyes. Next, we visited a shop in front of Nishi Honganji Temple. “Kameya Mutsu” is a long-established Japanese confectionery shop founded in 1421. Their famous confection, “Matsukaze,” is named after the battle of Ishiyama Honganji Temple (now the site of Osaka Castle). It’s a pleasure to enjoy it at home. Opening the package, the gentle aroma of white miso spreads. I was surprised at how delicious it was! It’s a sweet with a pleasant texture and a gentle sweetness. Let’s go back to our walk! We took a short detour to Ryukoku University, which has been used as a filming location for movies. Our final destination… While we waited , we chose a menu. (Reservations are also accepted.) We were shown to a room on the second floor. It opened in 2016 as a cafe run by “Kaikado,” a long-established tea caddy manufacturer celebrating its 150th anniversary. This renovated building was formerly the Kyoto City Tram office and garage. The Iwarecha (pot-fried tea) had a rich aroma, and once it cooled, it became sweeter. We also enjoyed “Angasane” from Umezono in Kyoto. It was a rich and refreshing cheesecake. We had a relaxing and luxurious time. Kaikado’s tea caddies were lined up. It was delicious. Thank you for the meal. Now, let’s head home… A quick introduction to my purchases ♬ This is what I got from “Gallery SON.” I wanted to soak the wick in oil and enjoy the flickering flames… This is what I got from “Antiques PONPON.” The soba choko (soba cup) and plate I found at the “Toji Junk Market” were just the right size for a white teacup . With its plump texture and size, this versatile soba cup has joined the elite family, making for a delightful tea time. Thank you for watching until the end. Subscribing to the channel and giving it a high rating will be a great encouragement. I hope to see you in the next video… Have a nice day🍂
